After updating i have had the same problem as imspaz1 when i put my tomtom710 on my car dock it asked me if i wanted to 'connect to computer?' it also lost audio! The only way i could fix this is to install an old version of the application on the tomtom. i used the restore option on tomtom home. only problem is that i can't update my tomtom anymore but at least i can use it again!

My Magellan 1200 car GPS says "The USB has been connected to the unit. Please follow instructions for updating maps or software". This happened before and It started to work properly later that day. I...

The USB connection to the GPS serves 2 purposes. It charges the battery and interfaces with the computer to update and or get new maps.
There are separate chargers so you do not have to hook it up to the pc.
There are also car chargers for extended service in the car.
The indication of updating may be needed but you won't know unless you select it.
I updated my Magellan 1412 recently, I downloaded a file, and when I connected the GPS to the pc, I was instructed to run the program I downloaded.

good luck and don't forget to vote!!!

Freezes on start up

my usual faceatious comment to freezing GPS is to put a match under them to thaw them out.
But on a serious not i would suspect that your maps have somehow corrupted and need reinstalling

I just got a Magellan roadmate 1200 over the weekend from a friend and when I plug it in it loads to a screen that says the usb is connected follow pc instructions

The USB must be for charging the unit and downloading updates when it becomes available. You have to unplug the USB and use the battery power to put in addresses .My 1200 does the same.
