Bios Software Thanks for the suggestion on the CMOS Battery. I've replaced the battery but I receive the same results -- Vaio VGN FS740/W does not boot. I have searched Sony's support page but I can not find where I can download update Bios software. Any suggestions? My cheers, Mik

Remove the battery, remove the power cord and start taking the laptop apart. You will need to remove the CMOS battery located on the motherboard and let it sit for an hour or two. Then but it all back together. The CMOS battery is a silver battery about the size of a nickel.
To reset the BIOS read the information from this link.
In case of your Sony Vaio laptop the easiest method would be using software from Hiren's Boot CD as it's pretty hard to open it up and reach for the CMOS battery or the jumper.
To reset the bios password on your laptop, you will need to remove the
cmos battery on your laptop for some minutes and insert back, the cmos
battery is located on the motherboard of your laptop, once the cmos
battery is removed from the motherboard for some minutes, the bios
password will be reset, and that fix the problem.

In case of your Sony VAIO laptop the easiest method would be using software from Hiren's Boot CD as it's pretty hard to open it up and reach for the CMOS battery or the jumper and I wouldn't recommend doing it especially if it's under warranty.
I have set the password for administrator when i entered the bios set up. you can change its setting but not the configuration unless you've entered the password. you can't change the password with a new one if you cant enter the old password. Next time dont forget your password because laptops has its security even when stolen you cant open its bios set up if its protected by password. CMOS battery is in the mother board. You need a service technician to open your laptop to reset the bios setup battery.
you want to be looking for the rtc(real time clock) which is a little unit not much bigger than ur thumb nail.next to it youll find the battery(sometimes heat sealed with plastic.)if you remove this battery for about 5 mins then replace it or in ur case maybe renew it this will reset bios to factory(also method for bypass passwords as every thing is reset)
you might also wanna check ur video card.(connections and dust)
