I read this blog a customer on wrote. He had the same problem twice:
Unfortunately for me the unit had broken twice since May 08,
The first time it wouldn't fire up then shut off.
It took weeks to get a diagnosis.
Pool guy said he diagnosed it as an igniter & ordered parts & the parts never showed. After 4 more weeks of not having a heater I called a warranty center and the factory repairman came out. The guy literally replaced 5-6 different components costing upwards of 100 dollars each- over the course of half a day looking for the magic combo that would make it work.

The broken part was the very last thing that could have broken - the gas block. Im still trying to figure out what could even go wrong with a solid looking block of metal.

Access to the inside is a breeze and thats a good thing. Each panel has basically 4 bolts holding the panel on. It is easy to get to the components, and the system has onboard diagnostics but its hard to actually nail down problems as the on board diagnostics dont seem to be able to pinpoint issues really well as each problem required multiple investigations.

A month ago it started firing up and clicking off. Another multi- diagnostic problem. My pool guys diagnosed an igniter - again.
Another factory guy came out and traced the problem to a stuck internal thermostat. After replacing the internal t-stat the service guy traced its sticking to the water chemistry being "off" and showed me a corroded t-stat.

My chlorinator handles chlorine and I measure Ph weekly- if this is true one can NEVER let chemistry be off for any amount of time? That just isnt how pools work, all chemistry is a bounce bewteen a few point on each end measurement. - Or does this thing have a run of bad parts?

So Im building a love hate relationship with this part - (like the Miele blue moon vaccum in another review) I love it when it runs, but it doesn't seem to run reliably.
The unit also has a gas shut-off valve that operates when the flame goes out, so the thermocouple (flame sensor) could be malfunctioning.

Does a hayward gas heater have filters within the unit?

there are no filters in these units. there is a thermostat, low limit switches, high limit switches, pressure switch (1-5lbs), fireman switch etc. because it is a propane unit, fires and runs, i would suggest checking the supply pressure for the propane. if there is less than 30lbs in the tank, the system may not run properly. if it was plumbed with the wrong size supply pipe, that could be an issue.

Upon start heater comes on for about 5 seconds and shuts down. Then starts again and stops again, and so on. "PRS" appears

PRS means the pressure switch is opening and shutting off the heater as you describe. Either your filter and/or inlet baskets need a good cleaning or the pressure switch in the heater is failing. Try a thorough cleaning first and then replace the pressure switch if necessary.

R100 reddy heater, low pressure forced air heater. the heater ignites, motor runs for 30 seconds then shuts down. photo cell good, filters clean, no ignition board, pump pressure unknown.

The R100 is a kerosene heater and the RLP100 is a propane heater so I am not sure when one you have.
If it is kerosene then you may need to check the pump pressure. Also the Safety swith can give you a cut out after 30 seconds.

If the unit is Propane then you could have a bad control board or a flame sensor.

High pressure, and heater noise

I am not sure if you have solved this issue, or not, but if the PSI on the gauge is high then the problem may not be the heater. When you have the system turned on, and the PSI is reading higher than normal, just the flow of water coming out your return lines. If the flow is normal, like when you clean your filter, then see if you have a way to re-route the water so it bypasses the heater. If the PSI on gauge drops, then the issue is in the heater.

If the flow of water is slower than normal, with the PSI reading high, then you have a blockage somewhere in the system. It could be something simple like removing debris from skimmer and pump backets, to time to backwash, or clean, the filter.

If the flow of water is really hard and fast, with the PSI high as well, then you have too much water going through the system and need to slow it down.
