How to set magneto gap in poulan 42cc. also how to test the coil if it is working well. there doesn´t seem to be enough spark

Ignition module gap
Place a business or index card between the fly wheel and coil, rotate until the magnetic attraction pulls everything tight together. Tighten the coil screws, rotate the flywheel until the attraction abates and remove the card. Ensure nothing contacts when the flywheel is rotated.

You may need to use a jumper wire between the threaded part of the plug and the cooling fins. You do not have to bend up the electrode.

What is the air gap on the coil & the spark plug gap on a 42cc poulan chainsaw


Hi Mike:
It's hard to go wrong with 30 thou on a spark plug, and If I remember correctly, isn;t there a mark on the coil bracket that shows where to line it up? As long as it's not touching the flywheel those saws want to run.
Bolt it up and back to the woodpile!

Gap coil on ppb 330 poulan pro


First and foremost ppb330 is a model number for a grass line trimmer, gas model.
Second, I am unsure what you are asking. Gap coil?? Do you need the spark plug gap for your chainsaw? That gap is .025.

The gap for all Poulan chainsaws, regardless of the spark plug used, is .025.

How do I get spark


Make sure the magneto is not grounded and make sure the air gap between the flywheel magnet and magneto is set to specs. If air gap is too wide, it will be difficult for the magneto to produce an efficient spark.

What are the symptoms of a bad coil on my Poulan chainsaw? Mine only sparks at high RPM's, as tested with my electic drill motor spinning the engine and grounding the removed spark plug to the engine...


There has to be a reasonable spark at hand cranking speed, with most electronic ignitions they work off speed of rotation so you do need to crank the engine at a fair speed, check the air gap between the flywheel magnet and the ignition core, this should be around 0.3mm, if there is not spark at all when cranked well it will be a replacement unit required.

No spark - even replaced spark plug...... I'm thinking a bad magneto....??? Any thoughts or direction would be appreciated. Thx.


Most gas-powered tools of this kind use a permanent magnet flywheel and a stationary ignition coil (they call it solid state- I guess so, no liquids involved.) The ignition coils are coming from China and are of lousy or at least inconsistent quality and are frequent failures.
If you decide to replace it your self (not difficult) use a gap gauge of some kind so you can space the new coil's core the original distance from the flywheel otherwise you will end up doing it by trial and error. It will be in the range of a few thousandths of an inch.

Yes. I would start with the plug wire. If your gap is correct and you know that the coil is good. Then it should be the wire.

Alright, remember that 2-Stroke motors are meant to do 2 things:
Break down, then Frustrate you.

So, here we go: (Electrical)

Rotor Magnets, Magneto (ignition coil), Spark Plug Wire, Spark Plug, Spark Plug Ground (Cylinder Head).

In that order!

Check your "fire" from the Magneto:

1. Check your Kill Switch. In other words, leave everything normal, and unhook it. Did she start? Kill Switch it is! Kill Switch/Wire comes from the Magneto (single wire/ground) to the Switch itself. So check that wire AT the Magneto (Is it loose and grounding out? Is the Kill Switch grounding you out where it is, because of crud, junk, or because it is touching the block when it is not supposed to?)

2. Check your Spark Plug Wire. Easy, unook it from the plug, stick your finger in, give it a crank (non-MultiMeter way). Did you get shocked? Then it ain't your Plug Wire and Magneto!

With a Multi-/Volt Meter, simply hook her up, and check for juice WHEN you pull the rope. If you got juice, it ain't your Plug Wire or Magneto!

Checking Spark the "normal" way: Grab the Plug with a pair of insulated pliers, hold the plug end against the cylinder head, and pull your rope. Any Spark? What color?

3. STILL no fire. It leaves: Magneto and Plug Wire.
Luckily, they are both in the same place! Tear your blower down, and check to see if the Magneto has slipped out of place (gap is WAY out), or if the Plug Wire has worn to the point it is grounding you out. While you are there, check your Kill Switch wire, to see if she is grounding you out then and there.

4. STILL no fire. That means: Magneto Failing, or Magneto JUNK.
Buy another one, replace it! (Or steal one from another junk Blower/Weedeater. These things are fairly standard, and easy!)
Or, Bad Plug Wire. Meaning she has failed out on you.
Wait......that means: Replace your Magneto! Lucky the things are built together right?
