If you previously have stored files (and photos) onto the drive, then it _had_ to be formatted before its first usage.

If it now claims to need to be "formatted", then it probably is the "table of contents" on the disk-drive that has become scrambled.

Look online for information about "File Scavenger" type of utility programs, that can read through the disk, sector by sector, and try to "stitch" together the sectors, to reconstruct your files.

My window wista cannot recognize the external hard drive maxtor 3200

If it is a brand new hard drive that you got what you will likely need to do is format the hard drive first. When you plug it in what you need to do is go to start - and then right click on "computer" and select "manage". This will open a new screen that has options. Click on "Disk management" on the right of that screen. You should see your new hard drive on this list. NOTE: Make sure you select your maxtor hard drive, not your computer hard drive. Right click on the drive and hit "format" and then follow the prompts or accept the defaults. Once this finishes you should be able to access your hard drive. If you have any other questions feel free to post a comment to this answer. Good luck!

Maxtor Personal Storage 3200, after years of use my Vista machine now tells me that the USB Device isnt recognised.

However last month I found that the Maxtor is no longer recognisable to my machine. Reading through related postings on other sites it appears that Vista updates from Microsoft may be the reason why this functionality has suddenly ceased. I presume the security updates in particular may have meant that the Maxtor 3200 is also considered a potential threat. The question is who will take responsibility for resolving this issue of Maxtor 3200 users no longer being able to access their back up files via their Vista based machines. Personally I believe the onus is with Microsoft

hope this helps

Maxtor access (pc and MAC)

Yes, formatting included erasing the drive and renewing the partition. If you want the drive legible on pc, but will be working in both environments, then you can do 1 of 2 things....

easiest, purchase MACDRIVE, it will allow a pc computer to see and use Mac items on the drive.

You could also transfer the content to another drive temporarily, format the drive in question to MS-DOS, then transfer all that content back over...using a MAC to do so.....

keep me posted..
