Question about Compaq Presario 5000 PC Desktop

1 Answer

The CD ROM quit working on my computer, the computer does not reconognize the drive as being there. I went into COMOS to make sure it was in the boot sequence but that didn't help. in all of my programs that a log on feature the CD drive is not a option. I have tried several types of CDs but nothing is recongnized. I was cleaning unused programs off the computer and then defrag it, when I turned it on the next day many of my wanted programs disappeared along with the CD drive

Sounds like the CD-Rom drive is junk. Try swapping it out with another to see if the CMOS can recognize any CD-ROM drive.

  2. Computer hard disk drive is not properly setup in BIOS.

  9. Loose or Faulty IDE/EIDE hard disk drive cable.
  10. Failing to enable USB keyboard support in the BIOS.
Solutions

Computer is booting from a non-bootable source

Many times this error is caused when the computer is attempting to boot from a non-bootable floppy disk or CD-ROM. First verify that no floppy diskette or CD is in the computer, unless you are attempting to boot from a diskette.

Note: This error has also been known to occur when a memory stick is in a card reader and the computer is attempting to boot from it. If you have any card reader or flash reader make sure that no memory stick is inside the computer. Additionally disconnect all USB drives, cameras, ipods, iphones, etc. from the computer.

If you are attempting to boot from a floppy diskette and are receiving this error message it is likely that the diskette does not have all the necessary files or is corrupt.

If you are attempting to install Windows XP or Windows 2000 and are receiving this error message as the computer is booting verify that your computer BIOS has the proper boot settings. For example, if you are attempting to run the install from the CD-ROM make sure the CD-ROM is the first boot device, and not the hard disk drive.

Second, when the computer is booting you should receive the below prompt.

Press any key to boot from the CD

Important: When you see this message press any key such as the Enter key immediately, otherwise it will try booting from the hard drive and likely get the NTLDR error again.

Note: If you are not receiving the above message and your BIOS boot options are set properly it's also possible that your CD-ROM drive may not be booting from the CD-ROM properly. Verify the jumpers are set properly on the CD-ROM drive.

Computer hard disk drive is not properly setup in BIOS

Verify that your computer hard disk drive is properly setup in the CMOS setup. Improper settings can cause this error.

Corrupt NTLDR or NTDETECT.COM file

IMPOSSIBLE BOOT ON CD ROM

If your computer will not boot from the CD, be sure the CD is working.
Also be sure in the BIOS setup that you have told the computer that it should try to boot from the CD before it tries the hard drive. (You'll find that in the settings under boot order)

My dell inspirion e1705 cd and dvd drive isnt working how can fix it?

there's not much "fixing" that can go into cd drives other than getting a cleaning kit and making sure the lens doesn't have any junk on it. If you clean it and it's still not working, get on Dell's website and order a replacement.

okay first things first. look for your opening screen and click the appropriate button to boot into the BIOS screen. once in there move to Boot Options and select the appropriate device to boot from which is your dvd rom. in this screen also check to see what priority number your hard drive is in. if it is before the dvd rom select the correct options in your bios to move the hard drive down to the lowest priority. your dvd rom should be first boot device then usb second and so on making sure your hard drive is last. now go to save your changes and make sure you save your changed options and exit and reboot. now see if a screen comes up during the boot screen again that allows you to select boot device. some units have an option some dont. if your laptop has it good select it. its usually f12 or something like that. in that screen make sure you select dvd/cd rom to boot and click , then click your enter key a few times and you should be able to see your black screen toss a line up that says press any key to boot from cd. i have found that in some cases you have to tap the enter key to activate the dvd rom, dont ask me why. it sounds stupid but it works for some reason. once you are in this screen you can now restore you drive to its original factory settings....Good Luck! Let me know if you have any questions!

How to do a system recovery when my cd rom drive doesnt work?

got to have a new cd-rom drive mate, most practical approach.

other options are network boot (done in offices with many computers), USB boot (if your BIOS supports it & you need to have a USB device with the bootable image of the system disk), etc.
