Question about Meade ETX-80AT-TC Telescope

1 Answer

The autostar function states the I have misidentified the alignment stars that I use for alignment. NO WAY, Vega and Arcturus. Also one time the scope slewed from Arcturus towards Vega and then pointed right down to my driveway.

Do a RESET on the hand controller, then calibrate motors and train the drives.

Re-enter, time, date, and site.

I have an lxd 75 goto mount. When I align on a star the ra motor skews to infinity and registers a motor fault. It skews just fine from the hand controller but when I try to align during setup it goes...

most probably has a faulty shaft encoder on the ra motor. If the encoder is working correctly the fault will lye in the H-Bridge circuit that drives the motor or if you're really unlucky, further up the signal path from the detectors

What am I doing wrong with my star alignment process? Please help.

I don't know your scope in detail, but if you can read this you should be able to go to the user manual here
http://www.bushnell.com/manuals/telescopes/NorthStar788840_788850_788890_788831_788846_2010Revised5LIM_web.pdf?CFID=36472283&CFTOKEN=de4b165f584ad635-AF7E3AEE-A567-68CB-F21AC262CDAFA920&

There are a few things common to these goto hand controls.
- you must enter the time and date accurately, and be correct about daylight saving settings, and observe the date format
- you most likely will have to go through time and date setting steps each time, but the control will probably remember one of these at least. You will see what it has already set when you come to that step next time around.
- the mount should be leveled as far as possible, or pointing errors will appear when the scope slews around.
It could be that the scope has no idea at all where the align star is, when using Earth Align. You are teaching it that, but if the rough location it tries to reach is way way off, it seems you need a second star and Align Star mode. Often with these devices you need one star from either side of the meridian.
You could also start again with a different city, but one in the opposite direction to the first. I would try cities all around the compass to see if one gives a better result.

Hello my name is greg i have a lx200-acf from my dad when he passed away do not no howto use it ?

This is a great scope. I have a much smaller version :)
1. Take it out on some dark night. 2. Let it auto-align 3. Select something to look at using the AutoStar II 4. Press Go.
Gander at the wonders of the universe.
In the AutoStar, there is a program called Sky Tour. This will pick some things out for you.
Start with a "wide" eyepiece - to see more of the sky. Work your way to high powers as you need or as sky conditions permit.
Goto a few local "star parties".

All GOTO scopes have specific setup procedures, usually:

1. Level the tripod

2. Point the scope NORTH or in the HOME position.

3. Center both alignment stars

etc etc

Read the manual and follow the instructions exactly.

Used autostar recently making a 2 star alignment. It worked fine, finding what I told it to. Then put it in "Sleep" mode for the night. Next session with it i was way off in finding the moon. Any ideas...

Putting it in sleep mode (or what we call PARKING the scope) only works if the scope is permanently mounted or can be setup on it's tripod EXACTLY as it was in the previous session.

For portable scopes that you move in and out of the house this will not work. Just do a two star alignment and normal setup each time you take it outside.

Do a reset ON THE HAND CONTROLLER AND RELOAD THE LATEST firmware. Make sure you are using a separate 12 volt power pack and NOT the internal batteries.

After the reset do a Calibrate motors-- you must also TRAIN the drives. Read the manual for the procedure. Then take it out and do a two star alignment, using a separate 12 volt power supply.

Meade LX200GPS 16" out of calibration?

Before you panic I would update the firmware/software on the telescope. With an LX200 interface cable you can upgrade the software in your telescope from your PC by going to Meade's web site at www.meade.com

Download Meade's ASU (Autostar Update Utility) and the latest software for your Autostar II absolutely free. You can also use the ASU to add Comets, Asteroids, Satellites, and User Objects to your Autostar II with a few simple clicks of the mouse.

I believe you can get the manual here.

I can not get my Telescope to focus so a picture appears!

You should read the manual - available in the customer service section at meade.com. This is s 'D'eep 'S'pace 'I'mager, so it is geared for faint objects using long exposures (30 seconds and longer). Focus by locating a bright star in the camera, and adjust the telescope focus control for smallest star image. Then move to object wanted to photograph, and begin the long exposures.

When warm and indoors (!) connect Autostar to scope and by serial lead to a PC, allow Meade Autostar suite to update the Autostar Firmware to the latest version (2009!!)
