Re: unlocking a garmin c550
There is no "simple overlooked fix" for this as it is not a "bug" or a "problem." It is not unintentional. It was designed a security feature, and would not be much of one if it was easily "fixed." The only way to unlock a PIN locked Garmin is to enter the correct PIN, take the unit to the location at which the PIN was entered (as TOLady already said) or send the unit back to Garmin.

Garmin's security code is setup in such a way that if you forget the code you can drive to a previously set "security" location which would then allow you to turn on the machine without the code. You could then use the menu system to clear the code. What you will have to do is either try to get the code from the person you bought it from or send in the unit and a copy of your receipt to Garmin to have them clear the code.
I'm sorry to hear about your father. Unfortunately, you have only 3 options for unlocking a PIN locked Garmin. Enter the correct PIN, take the unit back to the location at which the PIN was originally entered, or return the unit to Garmin. If you are not the owner of record, however, Garmin will not return the unit to you.
Place your thumb nail in the groove located under the Garmin logo on the bezel.
Gently pull off the faceplate.
Press the reset button.
If it still asks for a code and you don't have it, it should ask you to drive to a secret location to unlock the device. If you don't know the location, the only other option you have is to send the unit to Garmin to be unlocked. You can also try to call Garmin with the serial number and see if they can do something less annoying to unlock it.
Nope. Take the unit back to your security location which you sent when you
first got the GPS. Without knowing the PIN or security location, you
will not be able to unlock the unit. You will have to send it in to
Garmin to be unlocked, and you will have to include your receipt from
an authorized dealer.
Unfortunately, even if you perform master reset on Garmin GPS unit, it does not reset Garmin Lock security feature, which password-protect most Garmin electronic devices to deter theft. If you forget the PIN or password unlock code to unlock the Garmin unit, the best solution is to bring it to Garmin to get unlocked. “Secure Location” does not unlock a locked Garmin unit either as it’s only a temporary fix as when it’s turn on outside the security location, the device is locked again."
So unfortunately, there is only one option: You have to send your nüvi into the Garmin, who can unlock it. Remember original receipt.
Your first problem was purchasing the unit the way you did. If you purchased it legitimately, you would not have this issue. Your only solutions are to enter the correct PIN number, take the unit to where the PIN was set, or send the unit back to Garmin.
The unit comes with a base map. You will need to purchase City Navigator software if you want more detailed maps which will show all roads. If the box contained a copy of the City Navigator and you threw away the code, you'll have to purchase another unlock code from Garmin.
