    Hi,

I have a pair of Motorola T5420 which i bought for quite some time. When I first started using it, its fine. But now I couldn't transmit between the two walkies, both walkies couldn't send or receive any message. Even both walkies are set to the same channels and codes, still didn't work for me. Need some help here.

    Thanks.

Hello rixonsusu,

In situations where one radio cannot talk to another radio the problem is often caused by improper setting of the radio's Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System (CTCSS), which Motorola calls "Privacy Codes." (Other manufacturers might use different names, such as Kenwood calling this feature "Quiet Tones.")

When CTCSS is activated your radio's receiver will be muted unless the radio receives a signal from another radio using the required Privacy Code. This prevents you from having to listen to other user's conversations on what can be busy channels with a lot of activity.

In one of your radios has CTCSS enabled and the other does not, or if the other radio is set to the wrong CTCSS tone, the situation you describe will occur: one radio will be able to talk to the other, but that radio will not be able to talk back.
Make sure both of your radios are set to the same CTCSS privacy code or that CTCSS is turned off on both radios.
Best Regards,

Agent Ken

    Hi again, rixonsusu,

To set the CTCSS / Interference Eliminator Settings on your T5420 radio do the following:

Press the MENU key until the code display in the top right hand corner of the LCD screen begins to blink.

Press the + or - keys to adjust the code setting.

Press the Push-To-Talk key to save the setting.

Just make sure that all the radios are set to the exact same code.

    Best Regards,
    Ken

Can you use a Motorola T5420 with a T5500?

Yes. You would only need to select the same channel and have the interference code set to the same setting on each radio.

Both walkie talkies are on the same channel, but will not transmit voice messages

Check your Code setting. Both the frequency and the code must be identical for the units to communicate. Shut off any special features and keep the radios at a simple setting until you get communications back.

Two sets of Motorola Walki Talki radios will not communicate.

In addition to the channel and privacy codes, some Motorola two-way radios have a feature called Eavesdrop Reducer where you have 3 scramble settings available; perhaps you have this set on one of sets of radios but not the other. It should be something like that because otherwise there is no reason that by setting the radios to the same channel and privacy code they wouldn't be able to send/receive to each other.

Unfortunately, parts were never offered for the T5400 series. Your best option is to find a used one on ebay to use for parts. Sorry I could not be of more assistance.

T5420 unable to transmit or receive. Please help!

This unit does not have a reset button. While troubleshooting you might check the batteries. Be certain they are in correctly and the contacts are free of corrosion. You can use a pencil eraser to clean the contacts.

Walk through all the programming instructions in the manual, double checking both the frequency and interference eliminator codes. A quick setting back to zero on the code would alleviate any problem with that section of the radio.

As far as your "paging" this operates on the same frequency and code as the rest of the radio. If the radios are not working correctly in this relm, the paging will not work either.

The Motorola T-5000R does not have VOX capabilties. Page 23 in the manual explains this.

From what you have stated, I can discern the radios will power up. You might try setting your interference eliminators to zero (off) to see if you are able to transmit at all.

You do not mention if you are using AA batteries or rechargeables. Either way a fresh set of charged batteries would be best for a test. It is clear you were getting power. However, it does take more energy to transmit than to receive. If your batteries are low or bad, pressing the PTT could us all the energy the radio has, and yet not transmit to the other units.

You might also check you VOX settings if any and be certain they are turned off.

It is not likely 4 radios would fail all at the same time. So it is probably a programming problem. Hope the user manual helps you find the solution.
