SOURCE: briggs and stratton engine smoking

if your oil level is to high it will do this. i would drain and refill the oil to oem specs slowly as not to overfill so it doesn't blow over the top of the piston.hope this helps

SOURCE: engine will not run at steady speed, govenor

On top of carb you will see a jet that is slotted, remove with screw driver and use a very thin wire to clean out hole in jet. Some had a black metal clamp holding it in place, remove that one by removing phillips screw, black clamp then use small pliers to pull jet out of top side of carb.If this does not work remove carb bowl and jetting in bottom-center of carb and clean jetting holes with a small copper wire. The mixture screw is for low speed air/fuel mix, this engine does not have a high speed fuel screw.Fixed jet.

ADJUST THE GOVENOR ON MY LT 155 John Deere lawn tractor

This should be Kawasaki engine; although, it could a Kohler. The IPL on this doesn't specify which engine it has. It would nice if it did where I could look the engine's service manual but the following should be what you need.

You place throttle in full throttle position. You need to watch the linkage at the governor shaft for which it turns as you go to full throttle then you would continue turning the governor shaft in that direction until it stops. From there you tighten the retaining bolt or nut and you should be good to go.

I have a 18HP B&S Vangaurd Vertical shaft on a scag walkbehind motor runs good untill I engage the blades then it seems to draw down to about half throttle until I disengage the blades then the motor...

Check the govenor spring to see that it is not stretched out or popped off...there should be a colored spring on the throttle plate where the throttle lever connects to...also, there are several holes in the plate where the spring attaches...these hole will set the sensitivity of the govenor...you may need to make it more sensitive to hold the engine speed high when engaging the blades

Engine races

One thing I read is that on some the arm from the govenor shaft can slip on the shaft so the arm is rotated on the shaft to a point the govenor isn't even in contact with the internals driving the shaft. On those units a clamp bolt becomes loose causing the problem.

I suspect if there IS an internal problem it is severe and one would have to disassemble the engine before operating it lest damage occur from loose parts.

Throttle control not operating.

Need more information. Is your cable hooked up to the carb or broken? Try checking that. Rick
