Question about Frigidaire GLMV169 Microwave Oven

Open Question

I am replacing the magnetron in my Frigidaire microwave. The part is Sharp A349. The old part had 2 separate prongs, which do not appear to be labelled. The new part has both prongs together, much like a standard plug you would find on any electrical device. I am not sure which wire goes onto which prong. One prong is labelled F, the other FA, on the new part. The wires are solid red, and a red/black. Thanks!

SOURCE: I'm looking for a repair

Hello,

The truth is that the repair manual for your Frigidaire microwave is not available anywhere online. The manufacturers of this unit did not make it available. I went further searching and couldn't find any.

I would suggest you contact the manufacturer of this unit via phone or e-mail and request for the repair manual from them. They might give it to you or direct you to a dealer where you can get the repair manual.

This is the best you can do to get the repair manual you are requesting for.

Go to Frigidaire's website, check "Contact Us" and you would see their e-mail and phone number.

Additional information concerning your Microwave's Magnetron;

A defective magnetron is the third possible cause of why your microwave is not heating, but you can hear a buzzing noise. Test your microwave's magnetron. Replace it if it is defective.

Testing a magnetron

NOTE: Before you test this component, make sure your microwave is unplugged, and that you have discharged the capacitor.

There are two tests to conduct in order to determine whether or not a magnetron has become defective. If you receive results other than what are detailed below, you will have to replace your microwave's magnetron. Each test is described for you here:

TEST 1: Locate your magnetron and label each of the wires attached to it so that you know which wires are to be replaced where. Set your ohmmeter to the lowest resistance scale. Take a resistance measurement between each of the magnetron's terminals by touching each probe to one terminal each. Reverse the probes and take a second resistance measurement. Each measurement should read less than one ohm.

TEST 2: Set your ohmmeter to its highest resistance scale. Touch one of the meter's probes to a magnetron terminal. Touch the other probe to the metal magnetron housing. Take special caution to not touch the two probes together. This could result in an inaccurate reading. This test should produce a reading of infinity - indicating an open circuit.

Read the tips on the below links on how to replace your microwave oven's diode and how to discharge the capacitor.

CAUTION: Your microwave oven is capable of giving you a serious electrical shock, even when it is unplugged.

Good luck.

SOURCE: I have a Frgidaire microwave

The unit normally draws about 13 amps of current when it's running, so it's not unusual for the wires to get warm.

A bad bottom door switch is very common in these units.

Once it's fixed, make sure no one opens the door while it's cooking. That causes premature switch failure.

Tell them to hit the "stop" pad first.

Check diode ( this connects to the casing of microwave) , the transformer, then the magnetron in that order. Turntable has separate motor and the spindle that fits onto oven plate are prone to breaking.parts are replaceable and can be bought off eBay for approx £24

My Frigidaire microwave trips the breaker every 5th or so use before the microwave begins to cook.

Thank you for your post, Steve Shaw!

From what you have described it sounds like a possible faulty wiring harness, control panel, or magnetron within your Frigidaire microwave. I would recommend having a professional out to provide a proper diagnosis. This will help to avoid unnecessary part purchases. -Matt

You should check for 3 volts on sec coil supply for magnetron but do this check with the hv capacitor and hvr disconnected if 3volts is present , most probably your magnetron is deffective, replace it with the same type

My Frigidaire microwave is less than a year old. It is making a loud noise while running. So it runs loudly but does not heat up food. Is there a simple fix or did I get a dud?

The symptoms of loud noise and no heat indicate a short in the magnetron or high voltage diode. Need to take it to a qualified repair, to figure out what the problem. The magnetron replacement can cost as much as a new oven. See what the warranty covers, maybe you might luck out.

Microwave doesn't heat anything

Sounds like the magnetron has failed. This is the component that produces the microwaves that heats the food.

The cost of the magnetron is about 95% of the cost of a microwave oven. Most people don't, for this reason, replace the magnetron, they replace the whole oven which is probably what you will end up doing.

There is a possibility that the circuit that provides power to the magnetron is faulty and you need to take it apart, find the proper electrical leads and test them with a volt meter. To do this you have to remove it from its mounting and take it apart. It is a fairly lengthy process however.

The most likely problem is the magnetron. Check your warranty in owners manual, I believe you have five year warranty on magnetron.

New GE Magnetron. Where does this new HV diode go?

Fixed it. There was a back capacitor fuse (I believe that's what it's called) on the old magnetron. I removed it and put it on the new magnetron. The HV diode is on the big silver capacitor and very easy to replace. I just didn't see it. It was definitely the magnetron and I hope that this new one comes with a warranty for 5 more years.

3 year old unit, oven works, microwave does not

hi,

You may need a new magnetron, contact sharp or the store you got it from; most microwaves have a 3-5 year warranty on the magnetron. If it's not in warranty, find a good appliance repairman, this is a difficult and dangerous repair job.
