I have the same exact problem. Called sony and had a tech over and no one has been able to fix this. I haven't replaced the lamp yet because the tech it wasn't the problem, and I've already thoroughly cleaned the inside of my tv and the tv has plenty of breathing room from the wall...what is happening? The screen goes black with no volume for a minute or so, then comes back on for minutes or hours afterwards with no issues, or then goes in and out every few minutes with this issue. The light is green still, fan is still working, but no picture or sound.

When I turn on the Sony KDF-E55A20 there is no picture. Then after a few minutes the picture comes on and then after about 20 seconds the picture goes out. Continues this cycle over and over.

I have the same problem, but the tech I used claim it was the color wheel going bad, therefore causing it to overheat. He claim it would cause over 900.00 to replace!!!! it sucks

When you turn the tv on, it works for about 15 minutes, then it starts to get lines and eventually fade out. If you run a fan behind it, it will stay on and run fine.

It works!! First i took off the front panel. Just check your manual for instructions, very easy to do. If you do not have a manual just down load one from google.. The instruction are easy to follow. The screw they have you loosen with a alan wrench is attached to the plastic, so you do not have to worry about dropping it inside the tv. Removing the lamp was simple. once out you will notice on either side are two small mesh screens. One of mine was 80% blocked with dust, the other side was only 30-40% covered. I used a vacuum to remove the blockage, i did not want the dust and dirt to go inside the bulb. i then cleaned all around the lamp. Reinstalled, and we are go to go. The kids are happy and i am happier since my wife not be buying a new TV.
total cost of repair $.00
time required to fix, less than 15 minutes.

Also when my TV was loosing sound and picture and then return. I did turn off my TV, then turned on. I nothiced a red blinking light. Mine flashed 5 times. After some reserch, 5 times is video related, bulb or video board. google red flashing light with the model you have and you will find what all the codes mean.
So if yours is flashing 5 times try the above, it might work for you and it is well worth the time before you call a tech and drops hundreds of dollars.

hope this helps.

I had the same problem with mine. I took the lamp out, comes out from the front, and cleaned the screens on the top and bottom of the lamp. If these are dirty, mine were, they are preventing the bulb from dissipating heat. This causes the tv to shut off the lamp to cool it down. Mine works like a champ now.

AFTER A FEW MINUTES OF OPERATION ON MY SONY KF-42WE610TH LCD PROJECTION TV THE SCREEN GOES BLACK.THE SOUND COTINUES AS NORMAL.AFTER A COUPLE MINUTES IT COMES BACK ON THEN REPEATS UNTIL THE SET HAS RUN FOR...

First blush - the protective device called a "thermister" is heating up and "fusing". When the system cools down, the thermister releases the protection and allows the highvoltage transformer to provide power again.

Often times a device is drawing too much current - and the thermister shuts off the device to protect it - much like a fuse.

I have been able to maintain service on my TV by adding more cooling air to the existing fan. If your cooling fan is not turning fast enough - it can also cause the problem.

Picture & sound go on & off every sec, red light blinks 5 times

helloFive blinks - AKB circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby indicator blinks for about 30 seconds then goes to the self-diagnosis function. Something is wrong with the video. Check video out, Q705, 732, 761 and other components on the C board, also check Q218, 219, 220 on the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking, try turning up screen slightly.

My Sony comes on then both sound and picture goes black.

After being on a little while, the screen goes black (no audio as well) for 20 to 30 seconds. Green light stays on. Then, picture comes back on and takes a couple of seconds to get up to full brightness. About 5 seconds or so after the video comes back, the audio returns.

Until this morning, has only happened a couple of times a day, now happening more often. About 3 times in last 20 minutes.

KDF-E55A20 is about 3 years old.
