Could be the starter, but check simpler things first -- remove the battery connections (negative first). Check that the fat red cable from battery positive to starter isn't frayed at the connector or partially broken internally, and that the connection at the solenoid end is bolted down tightly. Also check that the ground strap from the battery negative is bolted solidly to the chassis, not rusted or loose. If all this is OK, reconnect the battery terminals (negative last) and if all you get is a click on turning the key, you do probably have a bad starter or solenoid. They are replaced as a unit. Can find it on eBay or order from a small engine supplier. Good luck!

Have a Briggs 21hp model 33m777 engine will turn over without plug but when install plus will not spin fast enough to start drags

I am assuming the engine is in a lawn tractor with battery and key start? Have you checked your battery to see if it is fully charged and has the required cranking amps? Have you tried another battery or tried to jump start from a battery booster box?

Why does starter solenoid click & not turn engine over on 1993 GEO Prizm?

Attach a voltmeter on to the starter motor that is known to be good. If the voltage goes below 9 VDC with a known to be good battery we can assume that the engine is requiring excessive torque to rotate.

If possible using a torque wrench determine the rotation torque of the damper pulley. Find equivalent motor in another car and compare rotation torque. If excessive check engine.

Change oil and observe for water in the oil an indication of a gasket failure and water has replaced the lubercant. This is common in marine but antifreeze still has poor lubrication properties in cars.
A second test is the current at or above 9 VDC at the starter during crank. The current should be less than 400 amps. If the amperage at a no crank is excessive than the engine is seized.

If the car is standard shift I would but the car in high gear and push the car observing the force required. If it seems reasonable push the car and jump start the engine.

If it starts and runs and can idle OK it may be just the alignment between the starter and the flywheel?

It is also possible the the crankshaft is failing and the flywheel is wobbling. The failure would be a fracture in the crank.
With starter removed observe if the flywheel has any run-out as you rotate it from the damper.

Hope this helps?

Car just refuses to start

Clicking usually indicates low charge on battery, but it can also be the contacts from the battery to the engine and frame. Check the cables to see if they are not making good contact or corroded--if you are a DIY enthusiast change the battery cables or get a metal-wire brush & wrenches & clean everywhere they connect.

Another preliminary task is to do a wiggle test--wiggle all the wiring you can see under the hood & try restarting to see if there's an intermittant wiring or harness connection problem with anything under the hood. Honda Pilots have problems like this with the main wiring harness.

1999 ford explorer wont start. battery is new.wont start when jumped. it tries to turn over but barely. then only hear a click. when you turn the key the dash lights and radio lights flicker on an

Sounds like starter motor given your slow to no turnover, I assume your new battery has full charge, if not, check with meter, it may be a defective battery, or another issue with connections, did you clean cable connections when you put in new battery? I assume your engine was running properly before battery change and is not partially seized due to overheating or low oil.

Good luck,

Riding mower won't start & makes clicking sound when I turn key over

I replaced the starter and the battery on my 2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette when I turn the key to start I get a click and nothing is there something I'm missing

Try this: Turn on the dome light. When you turn the key to start and hear the click, what does the dome light do? If it stays lit or dims only a little bit, then the battery is OK. If it does completely out, then either the starter is drawing too much current, or the battery charge is too low to turn the starter overt. New batteries are not always fully charged. Now, if there was no problem with the dome light going out, there are a few possible issues:
  1. The new starter is bad.
  2. There is not enough current getting to the starter from the battery. This could be a corroded or loose connection at the starter or battery terminal, or there may be a partially melted fusible link in the cable from the battery to the starter.
  3. The engine may be seized. The starter cannot turn the engine over if the crankshaft is frozen.

Engine won't start turn

no crank
1: battery dead, not charged. does it jump crank?
2: bad battery (corroded clean em) cables lugs. (4 ends)
3: bad starter /solenoid, assembly
4: engine seized, (turn it by hand you cant?)
5: bad key line, (from key switch to PRNDL to stater , no connections)

jump start it, if passed test, battery bad/discharged , and if fail?
you then (battery is good)
hot wire the starter solenoid, keys in pockets
fail? yes, bad starter, seized engine. turn by hand , now you know.
if passes hot wire test, bad key line. (tiny wire)

easy huh?

I own a 2000 pontiac bonneville ssei that wont start, i thought it may be the battery but would not take a jump and all lights and heater fan are working at full capacity. I did the key trick 10 min- 3...

when the lights go out when the key is in the run position , that indicates loose battery terminals, battery posts and terminals are black and not shiny clean and bad ground wire or just a bad battery
have it load tested
