The SONY XBR has a Black cloud on the right half of the screen. Sometimes after 20 minutes of being on it goes away. Lately, it has not gone away. Sound is fine and I can see a slightly distorted picture under the black area.

My parents have the same issue with their Sony KDL-46V4100 TV and were told by the tech that the LCD screen was physically broken and would have to be replaced. The replacement of the screen would cost more than a brand new TV and the TV is not longer under warranty. After the TV is on for awhile the Black cloud goes away but it always comes back when they turn the TV off/on. It stays for 20 - 30 minutes sometimes. The Tech took both top corners of the TV and pushed one back and pulled one forward to show them he could recreate the problem after the black blob cleared up. By twisting the corners he made the blob reapper which he claimed was becuase of the damaged screen. I have no idea how the screen was damaged? I helped them take it out fo the box and set it up. We never dropped it bumped it once? It's never falled off the stand so go figure? It would be nice to find more people with this issue and get a recall going. Something that expensive should last longer than to two years.

    I also have the Sony Bravia 46", which have never been dropped, bumped .. and always handled with care. Since last year I have had the same problem - the right side of the screen is distorted .. last for 20-30mins . The last two months the distorted lines have now gone horizontal.
    Thanks for your post, as this confirms to me its a Sony production problem

    I have had the exact same problem with Sony Bravia 46", It was setup by Sony staff themselves.. It has never been dropped or hit by anything. I baby this TV. I have started having the exact same problem... black cloud on the right hand side.. goes away in 30 minutes or so... comes back sometimes... lately sometimes it stays longer than 30 minutes.
    Did you guys decide to take an action or do soemthing about this?
    I am all for it if you decide to do so... I also have printed this thread off to show the technician.

    Same issue here. Mine started about 3 weeks ago and goes away after 15/20 minutes. Any solutions? I saw re-seating connections may help but looking for confirmation

    I have the same problem, 46" bravia...a black cloud on the left side of the screen just randomly started to appear and goes away after 20-30mins. about a year and half old.

    not sure if this is a good thing or bad thing that i found this page, but regardless, i have this right-half-dark-blob as well as horizontal lines (3 or 4) for a while, right after turning it on. i don't send any signal, and just have the blue screen on so i can watch the blob go away after a few minutes. like you all have said, i too have baby'd this television as we all know, it wasn't cheap, especially years ago. i can't believe this is happening. i'm fine w/ the fact that it takes a few minutes to "warm up" but as we all know, it's just a matter of time before this thing dies. if anyone else has info, please share.

    Same issue with the blurry right sid eof the screen upon startup, you also have to turn it on and off a few times just to get an image. Less than 2 years old, Sony says out of warranty, not our problem. Its obviously a product defect which many many people have had and they know about it but have decided to take the least costly route which obviously upsets everyone. Let everyone know how Sony treats its former customers

    This is happening to our Sony Bravia XBR 46" too. It just started happening in November. I have re-seated all cables, but it does go away- in about a minute of so. Sometimes it comes back briefly (a few seconds). There has been no damage to it and I dust often. I heard that the optical block can get damaged on Sony sets and take a while to warm up. But, it has been perfect until recently. I never had any issues with it and it's about 3 yrs old now. Hmm.. Seems like they knew they had issues, and a tv shouldn't have a lifespan of 3 yrs or less.

    Your technician was likely wrong. I resolved my problem of no picture just awihle ago. first try pressing and releasing the input button on your TV or remote. I tried it several times to no avail. An instruction or cue for what to do should appear on the screen. In my case none appeared. I now put off the cable box as well as the TV. Detach the S viceo cable as well as the co-axial cable from your TV and cable box. If it is component cable there, detach them as well. Now reconnect the coaxial cable firmly. avoid bending it as much as possible. Reconnect your component cable. Make sure they are connected to the correct slots on your TV and cable box. and make sure they are firmly connected as well. I restart my cable box and TV and presto it work. However, it may happen that you are not using the correct power cable. So make sure you use only the power cable supplied from Sony for your model. Do not use replacement as it might not be compatible.

    I have the same problem as well, black on the side, tv corrects itself after 30-40 mins, tv less that 2 years old. Last 2 days picture not correcting itself so called a technician today and described the problem and he said that is a common problem for that model. He was going to check for recall info, waiting to hear back.

    My Sony is a 46 inch Bravia KDL-46S4100 and has this same screen flickering problem. I bought it new at Walmart and have had it for 25 months now. The problem started about 3 months ago. (Today is 4-02-11) However, it took the set a couple of months to finally stabilize it's malfunctions to this last level. Before that it started out with a dark fuzzy line about 12'" wide in the center of the screen with fuzzy harshly discolored multi images or lettering on the left side from top to bottom. As it warmed up (10 - 15 min.) the line went away and the picture appeared to "snap" into full focus and then resumed normal function. Over the following few weeks the problem changed and as the dark line would fade away it was replaced by a set of fuzzy off color (usually rust orange or greenish tint) multiple images or multiples of vertical lettering on the left side of the screen. Sometimes this would go away after about 15 - 20 min and sometimes it would not. The final "snapping" into full and normal focus and color came less and less frequently. Now it goes through the same routine and the final outcome is that the left side of the screen cleans itself up but now FLICKERS in about 4 or 5 horizontal segments (each is about 8 - 10" tall). The segments are pretty well focused and have true colors and the correct brightness. These segments run from left to right and vary from 1 to 2 feet in length. This is where I am at this point in time. HOWEVER, I had a certified Sony Tech visit me ($150) before this problem finally stabilized and he said it would cost $3,333.00 to fix it. The set cost me $1,288.00. He did not run any diagnostics and he didn't have any test equipment either. His sole function was to take a couple pics. of the screen in its failure state with his cell phone and forward them to someone at a centralized service center. They called the shots and told him I had a bad panel and in order to fix it we would have to replace the panel along with its corresponding A and G boards even though these boards seemed to be working correctly. My problem is that the new panel is NOT compatible with my current A and G Boards, even if they are fully operational, so they must also be replaced in order to accommodate the new panel. It appears that the engineering fixes, changes, and updates that Sony has injected into this failing series of flat screen TV's has caused the other working components to become obsolete before their time. I fully expected my $1,288.00 Sony LCD HD Flat Screen TV to last at least 8 years from the time I installed it in my entertainment center in my home. Sony assigned an EVENT number to my problem and then offered me a new Bravia for $1,175.00. This was all they would commit to. My Bravia didn't last but 22 months before I started having major problems with it and I expected a lot more set life for my $1,288.00 than this. I believe they are having a lot of problems with these sets (so says the tech that visited me) but will not do a recall as an automobile manufacturer would be forced to do. Actually, they are doing their best to just bury the issue unless you have the juice and the substantiated proof that they have manufactured and sold you a big lemon. They must be subcontracting out their component and part manufacturing to China, Taiwan. Korea or Malaysia in order to save a few $$$'s and we get to suffer with the results of this cheaper manufacturing solution. I bought Sony because I believed they were a higher quality and more reliable manufacturer but it appears they value money more than they value a satisfied customer. I'm sure they just want me to just go away but this will not be the case. I just need to know how to get them to stand by their 3 year warranty for this set. Who can I to talk to and how can I reach them? They hide themselves very well. They make you go around the world just to get across the street. they try to wear you down and out so you cannot contact the proper person, thereby making that person culpable to their "Avoid the customer at all costs" strategy. I just received a Sony briva too, but my black cloud is on the left side, seeing as this is from 2010 and now it's almost 2015, did those (insert bad word)'s at Sony ever give a recall?

Exactly the same problem and we bought ours in Jan 08


The screen has failed. Well specifically one of the small baords attached to the edge of the actual LCD panel itself. It is not replaceable on it's own only with the LCD panel itself.

If the TV is under warranty, Sony is 3 years I think, then take it back.

XBR 4 vertical black band, ghosting/smearing, getting worse.


Hi, I have a similar issue which is progressively getting worse. My TV is on a sliding mount, and interestingly enough, sometimes I can "jilt" it by hitting it and it clears. This seems to me to be a connector problem, where heat (thermal expansions, electrical resistances) can introduce degrading signal. Now if I could find a manual on how to take this damn thing apart.......Certainly does't solve the warranty issue, but at least gives a reason for one to kick their TV.

just need to balance the three colors red,green and blue that may help remove the front covers and look for black module that have sccree and focus controls just move a little bet left or right be carefull because you can loos the picture e-mail me for more info

on the tv remote: press menu, external entry is highlight (yellow) right press on the outer circle then scroll down to video 4 (satellite entry) (it could be on video 3 depending of the satellite assignment entry) when video 4 is highlight (yellow) right press on the outer circle on the screen you will see 1080i if settle on an HD channel hope it will fix your Sony Bravia..
