Question about Kohler 3386-6 Rialto Skylight Round Front Toilet

1 Answer

I have a 10 year old Rialto model with a elongated bowl. When I flush the toilet the flapper will just not seat itself properly. The sides of the flapper don't grip the rectangular over flow snugly. That causes the the float part of the flapper to not seat itself., Water keeps leaking into the bowl. I've bought Four kohler flappers from Furgueson and 3 Korky flappers from Home Depot and nothing seems to work. Actually I have 2 rialto toilets and they both leak. I have 1 San Raefel toilet that works great. Had it for 10 years. Can you help, it's driving me crazy. Alanbachman@aol.com. Phone 702 3634480 Las Vegas

My toilet keeps leaking from tank to bowl--replaced all internal parts

If the flapper and all has been replaced. then it must be worn out where the flapper sits. or its not smooth.check to make sure it is smooth where the flapper closes, and make sure it closes fully when flushed. you might be better off with a new toilet, but thats up to you!

I have a new American Standard Cadet 3 that was just installed. After flushing, the water fills into the bowl. However, after several minutes, the water in the bowl slowly drains away and is nearly gone....

Sorry for problem with new toilet.
You say water is leaking out of the bowl?

Toilets have 2 parts:
1) Tank: where water is stored for the flush and is sealed with a flapper.
2) Bowl: where water flushes down.

a) If tank is leaking water, then flapper is suspect. Replace flapper and see if that works.
Lift up flapper and run finger around rim to see if there is a rough spot that would indicate flush valve is defective, and needs replacement.
See typical flush valve

b) If bowl is leaking, that is very unusual and would indicate a crack in the porcelain.

If installer sold you the toilet, it is his responsibility to make good on product.
All products are guarantee against workmanship flaws.

Toliet won't get rid of solids

first shorten the chain from flush lever to the flapper valve by one or two links at a time until flushing properly

second the flapper valve might need a wipedown as well as its seal (top edge of tube where water goes down into bowl) the leaking is because the flapper valve is not seating properly.. you may need to replace the flapper itself.. easy to do, and a common part at hardware store.

Basement toilet drains slow sometimes ,other times doesnt want to go down all the way. seems as if there is no pressure to remove waste

if the toilet is old or not cleaned proper, the water jets that shoot the water into the bowl might be clogged. If the jets are clogged with moldor hard water build up the toilet will not flush proper. If you can take a 3 gallon bucket of water and pour straight into the bowl and it flushes fine you have a water pressure problem as described above. the problem also might be that your water inlet system is not letting in enough water to fill the tank. If this is the problem you need to replace the water inlet mechanisim, such as a fluid master. If you use a blue water device that hangs on the side of the tank in the back of the toilet you might have a peice of it under the flapper that takes the water to the bowl when being flushed. Check under the flapper if you put cleaners in the tank.

Crane toilets don't flush properly, ball comes down too quickly

adjust the flappers-- either adjust the length of the lift line-from flapper to handle and or the flapper itself not properly mounted on tank seat

My one piece elongated bowl toilets are filling for no apparent reason between flushes what can I do to fix the problem

it sounds like your flapper (flush valve) is leaking.
if you here your toilet filling up and no one flushed.
push down on flapper to see if you here the water stop leaking out. if so replace flapper. even if toilet is 1yr or less old. could be a bad flapper. hope this helps. duane :)

What is the procedure for replacing the flush valve assy on a san raphael toilet. it is a one piece tank and bowl assy and must install from the inside of the tank. it appears to possibly rotate into place...

If you purchase the flush valve from Kohler, it comes without instruction. Rotation is the key to removal. First note the exact orientation of the assembly before attempting removal. Unhook the flapper chain and remove the flapper. The old assembly does indeed rotate in either direction for removal. I used a counterclockwise motion. (it was a tough turn, don't break the bottom of the bowl where the valve seat is located.) Then install the new foam gasket on the assembly. The new assembly is replaced in the reverse manner. I removed the new flapper from the flush valve for ease of install. You must put significant downward pressure on the flapper seat while rotation is accomplished. Orient the assembly as was the old one. Replace the flapper, connect the chain and observe the flapper for proper opperation.

is the flapper weighted? if it is it will cause it to shut prematurely. one thing you can do is increase the water in the tank. you might have to buy a pvc cuppler to put on the over flow to allow it to fill up more. korky makes a nice flapper thats not weighted

You need to replace the flapper and you will need to purchase one specifically for the Kohler toilet. I have the same toilet and tried using a generic flapper and from experiance, it didn't work until I bought the correct one and I'm a plumber! Have a great night.
