    same problem here

  • Anonymous Jul 13, 2008

With the five warning lights, and rebooting the printer, eight warning lights start flashing (ink absorber full). This all started after I replaced the ink cartridges for the first time. It appears to me in watching the ink levels on the new cartidges that they may be leaking ink into the ink absorber. Color printing is completely gone, even though there is ink in all cartridges, and service error code 5200 is appearing.

My ip4500 printed fine one day, then the next day I turned it on, it told me there was no printer head installed. As I hadn't used it in the interim, am very puzzled. Have had no probs up to this point and printer gets a fair ammount of use - about 500 pages per week or so.

    Going mad!!!!!

  • stevejolly Nov 17, 2008

Exact same problem -- after using my ip4500 for some time and successfully replacing color carts many times, I suddenly have five flashes from the yellow light and message(s) that tell me either that I have no print head installed or that it is sick. I did notice that there appears to be some residual black ink on the outside of the cart -- soooo, is there any way to clear the ink absorber, assuming that it's full?

I have exactly the same problem. Printer about 1 year old, lowish usage 5 flashing lights struggled for a bit but now refuses to print altogether. Can't find a new print head anywhere for less than the cost of a new printer!!!!!

Printhead can be washed under running hot tap to flush all the old ink away. I did mine and it didn't affect performance after drying it overnight in a warm area. Re-fitted it and away it went. Don't worry about getting connector board wet at the back.

It`s driving me crazy. Replaced both Canon i250 cartridges -- now can`t print anything as it keeps telling me there is no print head installed. This is ridiculous! Tried new driver; no good. Tried uninstalling/reinstalling; no good.
Has ANYONE come up with a solution for this very annoying Canon problem?
Thanks all, Art

Exact same problems with this printer as the previous comments. My iP4500 haven't seen much use but it worked fine until few months ago when it started telling me that printer head was not installed.  It tells me this everytime I started it up to print something.  I wrestle with it for about an hour and somehow I get it to print something.  It has become very annoying to a point where I want to throw it out the window and break things in my room.   Somehow... I don't think replacing the printer head will solve this problem, but I'll try it first.

  • To reseat the print head, make sure the printer is on.
  • Open the paper output tray and top cover.
  • Make sure the print head holder is in the center and open the inner cover.

  • Raise the print head lock lever and remove the print head.
  • Reseat the print head and lock the lever.
  • Replace the ink tanks.

Canon Pixma iP4500 error 5100

Hi You can Try
Another old posting
Error Code 5100
Solution 1:
Clean the timing strip.

Solution 2:
The purge cap (the white sliding mechanism that the print head parks to when it's not in use) may be not lubricated well enough .

Lubricate the sliders with some white grease (don't get it on the small wipers or the black caps); this repair probably require to remove the right panel off of the printer to gain access to the purge mechanism.
