HDC 2HP 5 Gal Pancake Air Compressor - replaced pressure switch - now takes long time to pump tire - motor runs long time - slow recovery - actually overheated and melted off the plastic part on muffler....

Your compressor takes standard 30 weight compressor oil or 30 weight motor oil... you need to put in the correct amount. The slow recovery is due to a leak somewhere. after adding the proper amount of oil, run the compressor and use a soapy solution to check for leaks. Check especially the tube that runs from the compressor head to the tank, and also check the air connection at the pressure switch. When you find the leak, you can disconnect the connection and use Teflon tape on the male end connector.

I have a newer Bostitch Air Compressor and it worked just fine a month ago and now we plug it in and the motor doesn't even turn on. And, no, it is not the outlet.

It is not uncommon for these compressor motors to "burn up". They are especially prone to overheating if a 14g or 16g extension cord is used to power it. Most of these do have a motor thermal protection button. Look carefully around the motor and motor mount frame. Of course, tracing the electric with a volt meter will confirm the location where the voltage terminates. The Auto/Off pressure switch is another possible fault. Taking the motor leads and powering them directly with 120v will confirm a motor problem. If this is an Oil Lubricated pump then double check by removing the back of the motor cover and turning the fan by hand. If unable to turn.. the pump may have froze up due to lack of lubrication. Usually a pipe wrench turning the exposed motor shaft will unlock the crankshaft and a high grade synthetic non-foaming motor oil in the crankcase will help keep it lubricated and it may contimue to work okay.

If it's an oil-less, none. If it's a regular compressor, use compressor oil.

I have a model cw0100 1hp 4gal. and need to know capacity of oil tank.

Check you model number. I don't think cw0100 is correct. Most 1HP 4 gal pancake compressors are oil-free.

Motor startup trouble while pressure in tank

My first thought was that the check valve is allowing pressure back into the compressor and preventing the motor from turning. That's still my best guess right now.

I think the cold weather start symptom is what you would see with any engine/motor -- it requires more torque to get it going. In this scenario, if the check valve weren't leaking, it would start okay when cold.

The reset button used on Bostitch is the type that cuts out when motor is too hot to safely run. You must wait till system cools a bit before the reset button will reset. May be a good idea to solve overheating problem before replacing reset. It is always best to connect the compressor directly to the outlet instead of using an extension cord. If it is already connected directly to plug, insure that the outlet is capable of delivering amps needed for your compressor. When the compressor reaches rated pressure and shuts off there should be a small release of air from the pressure switch. This release of pressure allows the compessor to start in an unloaded state. If the compressor does not release the air in the hose the motor will not have the power to overcome the backpressure and cause the reset to open. There is a capacitor that could be at fault. The capacitor must be removed from the circuit to test. It should test within 95 percent of rated value. Generally, overheating is caused by low power. A failed capacitor is caused by low power. Good luck, enjoy.
