You most likely have a defective defrost thermostat in this model. It is located behind the cover in the freezer compartment and is a small round device with two wires attached to it. It is attached to the freezer coils on the top right hand side. It usually has an orange and a brown wire connected to it.
Part number is 12001937 and should cost about 23.00. This part should read "closed" on a continuity check when it is frozen, and opens when it is warmed above about 55 degrees.
The idea behind this part is to shut off the heaterDefrosted manually two weeks ago; appears to be - 2_bing.gif during defrost should it get too warm in the evaporator area, however when they fail it does not allow the heater to come on.

Appears to go into an extended defrost cycle.

Sounds like your freezer has a bad defrost thermostat ( bimetal ) or bad #4 and/or #5 thermistor . This bimetal , has a high temp rating of 140 degrees , which means , when it gets to 140 behind the panel , it will cut off the defrost heater , to keep ice and food from thawing . The thermistors , tell the main control board the temps , and it decides when to restart the cooling process . I would check the thermistors by the digital controls , in the test mode , or have a technician check them for you .

One or more of your defrost components(defrost timer or board, defrost heater, defrost thermostat/ bi-metal) are bad. Unless you removed the inside back wall in freezer and completely thawed the evaporator, it will not cool properly.

Kenmore Freezer Model 23041

I have an upright freezer which temp was unstable. The coils were frosted up, and the circulating fan was unable to pull air across the cooling fins.I defrosted the unit, cleaned it up, and turned it back on. Worked fine until it frosted up again. The unit was a no frost model. I had to have it serviced, and one of the defrost sensors was bad. No problems since this was fixed.
