Acer aspire 5100 - screen is turned off, cant turn it back on

Hello,

Trying to fix an acer aspire 5100 which is out of warranty. my cousin turned the screen off. now when the machine reboots the screen remains black. So I am unable to see the screen to change it back. The beep bios codes indicate it cannot initialize the video screen to display any additional information.(1 long, 2 short). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I turned the screen off, in the bios. So I dont think the video card is broken or disconnected. Any other ideas? i was thinking of connecting a monitor to it and re-booting it. so i can change the bios back. dont know if this will work.

Boot up while pressing F2 until you hear a beep. Press F9 until you hear a beep. Press <Enter> until you hear a beep. Press <ESC> 2 times. Press <Enter> 2 times. This should reset the bios. Good Luck.

The bios beep codes indicate the video card is not working, so you won't see anything on the screen.

Your video card is either dead, or is not contacting the board correctly.
If you are keen to open it up I will offer instructions to assist you. But in reality, your safest bet is to take it to a laptop shop and get them to do it. There are a lot of tiny screws in these things.

You cannot turn the screen of a laptop off in the bios. You can however do a key press on the keyboard to activate an external monitor connected on the vga out port (where a second monitor would plug in)

If this is what you meant, then on your function keys you will see an icon with 2 monitors on it. Press the FN+that key. This works in 3 steps. Normal mode (just the laptop screen), external mode (just the external monitor), and both running at the same time.

Try that and see how you go =)

Acer Aspire 5100 laptop's screen remains black at start-up

This is probably a hardware issue with the monitor. Just to make sure, uninstall, and reinstall the monitor's driver. If that doesn't fix it, it's a hardware issue.

You will have to either take it to a shop, or contact the manufacturer (your computer should be under warranty if you've had it for less than a year).

Sounds like the power jack is loose if you have to hold it in a certain position. As for the screen your inverter might be shot. Try connecting an external monitor to your laptop and see if you get a display.

Acer 5100 Dosent turn on

My Acer 5100 did this awhile back and it ended up being the motherboard. I don't know if your laptop is still under warranty like mine was at the time but if it is Acer will fix it for free. You need to contact them through their website to do some troubleshooting and they will probably RMA it. Before you send it, take the hard drive out, connect it to an external drive case and pull off all your personal data. They will wipe the drive before they send it back. Good luck!
