Don't exactly know what the problem is but my Volvo 245 had the problem that the relay to gasolie pump got very hot so it stopped working. Try resolder the contacts in the relay.
Go ahead and swap the transmissions, and that should be about it. The b230 and b23 engines are basically the same block, so there should be no trouble there.
Did you check all the basics first? Your air filter or catalytic converter could be plugged, your brakes could be dragging, or incorrect ignition timing, dirty fuel injectors, insufficient tire pressure, poor wheel alignment, or you may even have a fuel leak that you are not aware of.
