Hi,

To my knowledge, Windows XP upon installation marries itself to the chipset of the motherboard, hence changing motherboard would result to a looping BSOD (blue screen of death).

A way around this is to use an OEM Windows XP installer and choose the second repair option wherein Windows will not partition, format or delete the previous installation but reinstall most of the device drivers and other significant registry entries, dll files and others. A word of caution though, you should create a new user name aside from the administrator account and your former user account. It is very possible that if you use your old user account, Windows will over write the old and your files would be gone.

Just to be safe, do a backup of your critical files on a separate medium such as a DVD/CD or a flashdrive.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

If you change the MB you will definitelly need to re-install XP cause if you leave it just as is, the windows will try to "connect" to your settings of the old MB to the new one, because all drivers are stored in your system, so it will not work and will render your os unusable and will definitely result in a bluescreen.

USB NOT WORKING?IT SAYS DRIVER NOT INSTALL?

Is the usb not working in any port and is it all devices that arent working? Usb drivers have been included since windows 98 SE. If for some reason they got deleted which is very highly unlikely, run a repair install by booting the the windows cd and it will replace them. Make sure though that its all usb devices that arent working, it could be that just the device you are trying to use requres drivers and they are not there. If thats the case post the device manufacturer and model number and we can help you find those drivers.

PC wont boot, not even to bios

Maybe the mobo is shot for u and he has his PSU shot.......Check for any burnt smells from the mobo. See if the cable from the PSU is properly connected to the mobo. Try removing all drives like graphics cards, RAMS one by one and see if it works.

What problem is it that you are having?
If you want to upgrade you're CPU here is the Asus link for supported CPU's P4S800-MX motherboard.
http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P4S800-MX
To the right of the list is the bios file that must be used to support the CPU.

If you need instruction on how to replace a CPU just let me know.

No booting

The problem is Operating systems are co-dependent on hardware.
If the motherboards, processors, ram, video adapters, etc don't match you would not be able to swap hard drives and expect to boot.

You could try pressing F8 on boot and try to access safemode.

If it does boot into safemode immediately it will want to reactivate windows.(because of all the hardware changes.

If it still can't boot, you may want to put the 80 gig in as slave to the 40gig and ghost the 40 gg hard drive over to the 80.

If you don't want to lose your data on the 80 gig then reboot with an xppro cd and reinstall windows in the same partition overlaying the installation on top of existing windows directory.

the new windows will have to be activated but all data will still be there.

ASUS P4S800-MX Boot / ISSUE

I'm sorry to say that I had much the same problem with a RMA'ed mobo from Asus. The one that came back worked for a short time, and then died.

I can't say that Asus is the only one I've had the same problem with, Intel has done the same. But I kinda expected more from Asus. I did not bother again, I just decided to do a mobo/CPU/memory upgrade at Fry's.

Sorry.
