The wireless network security settings on laptop do not match settings on router?

- This error occurs when the wireless security that you set on the wireless laptop does not match the wireless security on the router.
  • If the wireless router's security setting is WPA but on the laptop you used WEP for the wireless security, that's when a mismatch occurs.

- What you can do to resolve the problem is to delete the wireless profile you created on the laptop. After that, let the laptop search for wireless connection available, select the correct wireless settings and it should connect.
--For example the operating system of your computer is Vista, in order to remove the wireless profile you created and reconnect to the wireless router, do the following instructions:- Go to Start>Control Panel>Network and Internet> Network and Sharing Center- Click on Manage Wireless Networks on the left panel. Delete the wireless profile then Search for available wireless networks again. Type the correct wireless security settings on your laptop
-- If you would like to know what wireless security has been setup on the router, connect the laptop or use a desktop which is wired to the router then access the router setup page by typing or in the address field of your browser and then press Enter. Enter admin for the router user name and your password (or the default, password).

--After logging in. In the main menu on the left, click on Wireless Settings, from there you can check the wireless security or you can setup wireless security from there if you haven't done so.
Hope this helps. Have a nice day. Don't forget to vote if you find this guide helpful. Thanks.

I set up my Belkin N Wireless Modem and it has been working fine. Except I did not install it with a "password" at the time of setup. How do I put in a password now. I cannot find a program in...

Hi psheayn,

Kindy copy this steps in notepad and also copy the screen shot before u start doing it.

You can put up a wireless password manually b logging in to the router interface but you should be very careful because if you change any thing else it might be a messup your whole router so kindly do the following steps alone.

Step 1: Open the internet explorer

Step 2: Clear the address bar and just type the number alone which is

Step 3: You will get router screen as below

Step 4: In the left corner of the page under "Wireless" Security and select security mode as "64 bit WEP "

Step 5: Type any 2 numbers per box as u like and apply changes. Also make sure that you are gonna copy the password. If you want to connect any other computer in future you will need to have that password to connect.

Step 6: Under security in left side select "WPS or Wifi Protected Setup" and select WPS as disabled and apply changes. Dont worry it not related to security its just an option that has to be disabled if you enable the 64 bit WEP password.

Step 7: Then Connect wireless computer to the wireless network name and will ask for the password this time since password has been enabled. And ur router is gonna be a protected one and no one can hack it.

Step 8: In case if ur not able to connect to the network remove the preferred network and connect to it.

To remove preferred network

Start -->control pannel --> Network and Internet connection-->Network connection --> Right click on Wireless network connection icon --> Select 2nd tab Wireless network --> Remove preferred network one by one.

Windows Vista/ Windows 7

Start -->control pannel --> Network and Internet connection -->Network and sharing center --> In the left side select Manage Wireless network and remove preferred network one by one.

Check out the screen shot to enable security on the Router and to disabled WPS

To change your router wireless security

  • User guide here
Connect your PC to the router with a cable to one of the LAN connections - Now you need to Log into the setup of the router - to do that open a web browser, use Internet explorer (some routers setup pages do not work correctly with other browsers) In the browser address bar - Enter the user name (admin) and your password. Leave the password blank by default. Now you can goto the wireless section or secruity section and set the type of encyption to WEP, WPA, WPA-PSK etc and then make up your own password. See Page 25 of the User Manual
On the PC Double click on the wireless connection in the system tray (bottom right hand side of screen) and then connect manually to your wireless signal - you will be asked for the password you set in the router.
Now you are connected.
You may need to remove any old wireless profiles you have on the PC/Laptops Wireless Profiles - Vista/Windows 7: - delete the wireless profiles Start> control Panel> classic view> network and sharing center> manage wireless networks Delete the profiles you will then have to enter the wireless security key for any networks you connect to --------------- Wireless Profiles - XP - delete the preferred networks start> control panel> network connections> right click on the wireless connection listed wireless networks tab in the preferred network list click on each one and - remove button
you will then have to enter the wireless security key for any networks you connect to
