Engine does not turn over fast enough to start

Have replaced the starter relay, starter and battery but most of the time when trying to start the engine, it will turn over maybe one or two times, fire and then appear to lock up. Repeated attempts will only result in the starter getting very hot.

May be the problem is the hard turning of the motor. It may be caused by segments broken, bearings defective, oil problem etc.

Bighorn with 4gj2 engine. Why doesn't it start?

could be the battery is old and losing power, ie not enough to turn the starter motor fast enough to start. Or the starter motor itself is worn and will not turn fast enough,
ensure the connections to the battery and starter are good. if the battery is older than 5 years i would be a good idea to replace with an new one of the same power rating and size.
in winter it is often the case that old cold batteries do not perform well. if with a new battery the problem persists, remove the starter motor and have it checked, if it is defective it would have have to be removed to install a replacement.

one way to check battery power is to try and start the motor with the headlights on if the lights dim down a lot when trying to start that indicates the battery is low on power.

i hope this was useful.

Sarter will not turn engine over

Two things cause this...a bad starter or weak battery...not sufficient Amps will not allow enough power to the starter to spin it fast enough to start the engine....a bad starter simply cannot use the power supplied it to turn the engine properly. Have some one do a load test on the battery..tests the battery simulating starting the engine. If ok it is the starter if not replace the battery..good luck.

I was trying to start my car tonight, and it woouldnt turn over. I have all my lights so I know that it is not the alternator or the battery, could it be my starter?

Could be low battery. Did you hear a chattering sound when you tried to start it? Normal battery voltage fully charged is actually over 13 volts. Try to jump start it. If you don't get a response out of it, then check your fuses. Check engine bay fuses (under the hood) and interior fuses (inside the car-drivers side) Also could be starting relay. have a second person turn the key and you listen for a relay under the hood. If the IGN relay does not pull in, hten you either have a bad fuse, or bad relay or bad ignition keyswitch or bad transmission neutral position switch. if relay pulls in and then chatters, it does not have enough voltage to stay pulled in and attempt to run the starter motor at the same time, which is why it will make that fast clicky-clicky noise. if it does pull in and nothing happens then your starter is either bad or not connected electrically.

I can not get the starter to turn the engine over fast enough to start. The battery is fully charged. When I removed the plugs it turned over fairly fast but for only a short period of time. My friends...

What year, make, and model? As long as the starter is engaging, the starter relay is functioning properly. I would suspect the battery probably has issues. Find somebody with a load tester and test the battery load capacity. On the earlier Harleys, Shovelheads and electric start Panheads, and Sportsters, the starter drive and associated engaging parts,(the solenoid, starter shift fork, etc.) are worth inspecting. A bent starter shift fork will bind the starter drive and cause the starter to drag, (turn slowly). A bad solenoid will engage the starter momentarily, then disengage, or not engage the starter at all. The starter relay either works or doesn't work, ie, if the starter spins, the relay is doing it's job.
Get me the Year & model and I may be able to be more specific.

1991 harley FXR won't start; replaced bad starter. it still won't start

- If the starter is turning the motor , I dont understand why u replaced the relay and the ignition....but - thats water under the bridge now .... Open the primary and check the jack shaft... put a pliers on it - pull it out and turn it 1/4 turn a few times - make sure its not binding. Take a look at the bushing on the outer primary.... may need to bevel the edges a little. Make sure the battery is charged enough to give the engine a few strong turns. Let me know what you find
