Hello boboso1

If you do not have the login to access the router's UI (user interface), then you must physically reset the router to factory default settings in order to regain access to the UI and to disable its wireless encryption. (Wireless encryption is not normally enabled w/ the default settings.)

If you would like to give us the router manufacturer, model number and version number, we can point you to where you can find the owner's manual for this router.

The manual will provide you w/ directions for reconfiguring your router.

If you have any more questions, just ask. We're here to help.

Thank you,
BJ @:)

Forgotten password for wifi network

Which operating system ??
Your wireless Internet password is the encrypted security pass phrase that was set up when you installed your wireless router.

Your router allows you to access the Internet.
If you have access to more than one wireless network, you may need to remember multiple passwords.

If you happen to forget one password, you have two options: reset your password or locate the current password.

Windows 7 allows you to view the security characters of all your wireless network passwords.
Click the "Wi-Fi" network icon located on the Window's taskbar.

Right-click the name of your network's "SSID" name and select "Properties" from the drop-down menu.

Click the "Security Tab." The network security key is now visible but unreadable.

Click the "Show Characters" check box and this will reveal your wireless password.

Reset My WiFi Password

Wireless networking is a common feature in homes and offices.
Wireless routers provide access to a single Internet source, and wireless passwords ensure that only select users can access the network.

If a password is forgotten or lost, the password can be recovered or reset by accessing the router's Web-based settings menu.

Most wireless routers also have a reset button, which is capable of returning the router to its default settings which includes resetting the password.

Connect to your Wi-Fi or attach your computer directly to the router with an Ethernet cable.
Open your Web browser.

Enter the default address of your router.
The default address is listed in your user manual or on the product website.

Linksys and 3Com routers typically use "192.168.1.1" while Netgear routers use "192.168.0.1."
Enter your username and password.

Many routers use "admin" for the username and password by default.
Locate the wireless security settings. Disable the wireless security.

Reset to Factory Defaults

Locate the reset button on your router.
Typically the reset button is a small indented hole on the back of the device.

Insert a long thin object such as a paperclip and hold down the reset button for 30 seconds to revert the router to its factory default settings.

Locate the wireless security settings and add security as necessary.

What is our wep

Wep is a type of encription usually between a router and a computer.
See wikipedia.
the problem occurs when you try to tye more than one computer or add a printer to a router system/network. The wep must always be the same between all devices in a network.
its a password between devices.
It is always best to write it down, the password and secure it; some companys like verizon use the customer's phone number---- not smart

I have recently installed Netgear Wireless G Modem Router DG 834G but failed to select the path to encrypt my contacts with the internet - in other words I am a bit insecure. How do I change this...

Type in the routers sign in address in the address bar and you can open up the admin page. If I remember correctly, the url is http://www.routerlogin.net/ or http://192.168.1.1/ The default sign in is admin for the user id and password in the password box. User id = ADMIN and password = PASSWORD. This will get you to the default settings of your router and then you can set it up secure.

I want a secure line for my router on my laptop

While it is impossible to be 100% secure on a wireless network, there are several things that will help. Use the wep encription, use mac filtering and add only the addresses you want to connect. Once you have everything set up, disable broadcasting the SSID, and lastly, change the user name and password on the router. Don't forget to enable the firewall on your laptop. Amother thing you can do is go around with your laptop and map the signal range so that you have an idea where the signal limits are.

I need to find out how to secure my router

The best way in my opinion is to put your router behind a linux firewall, such as smoothwall. Any old computer with two network interface cards will work.
A guide to install smoothwall can be found here: http://linux-noob.com/review/smoothwall/express/3/

I have a wireless router and it works fine, but it is unsecured. How do I set up security ?

Securing wireless is a pretty simple process.

You can access your router by opening a IE browser page, then typing the default gateway IP address on the address line. In my case, my router is a Linksys. The default gateway is 192.168.1.1

Once you type that in, you will get the login prompt for the router. In general, the default user name and password is USERNAME left blank, PASSWORD admin the reverse, or admin for both. If those don't work, check the documentation for your router.

Once you access the router from the browser, you will have an option for Wireless, and in that option to enable security.

Currently, the most popular type of encryption is WPA-TPIK
Select that oprion if available, then select a passphrase. Personally, I suggest an old phone number you recall from your youth, it is 10 digits, and hard to associate with you but easy to remeber. Once you set encryption and the passphrase, save the settings and exit the browser.

When you try to connect to the network again, you'll be prompted for the passphrase, and a confirmation. Once entered twice, then you'll connect and have a secure connection.

Other suggested security items once security is enabled:

1. Change the login and password of the router (Done in the same router setup as the security)
2. Disable the SSID broadcast once the network is configured (Don't advertise the network)

Try using it without actually entering a password. Othewise, connect a computer to the router with an ethernet cable. Go to Start> Run> type cmd a black window should open up. Type ipconfig at the cursor. This will bring up a series of numbers. Try connecting to your router By typing the ip address that is in the "default Gateway" spot, in your browser address bar. If it has a login page, use "admin" as the user without a password and change the settings in there. You should be able to disable the password there.

Go to your web browser, and type 192.168.0.1 in the address box. It will prompt you for a user id & password. User id is usuall admin and the password is (password). If that doesn't work let me know what make and model router you have and i coan get you the approraite user and pass. Once you login correctly you can easily change password setting.

Hope this helps.
