Question about HP Compaq Presario V2000 Notebook

Power supply malfunction?

I have the CP V2000 laptop, and over the last few days I've noticed that when I move the cord, the charging icon on the screen changes to battery. I move it around and it changes back to charging.

However, last night I left my laptop on overnight and woke up to find it dead. No amount of moving the cord around has done anything. When I press the power button, the lightning light blinks three times, but it stays off. Also, my power supply cord is beeping, which I have never noticed before.

Can anyone help? I have an exam on Friday with no notes!

Thanks! I tried that but it didn't work. When I removed the battery, the blinking lightning light didn't go on at all. I tried moving it, but alas, nothing happened.

Remove the battery and try the cord again. Complete with the moving it around. It sounds like you have already diagnosed the loose DC plug adaptor, but the battery could have gone terminal.

Ok, removing the battery despite how it looks proves a point.

Your power connector on the board has broken away. The battery was the only thing running it after that and so now, no power, no boot.

This is quite a common fault on laptop motherboards and it can be fixed. You should have a laptop repairer in your area that will take care of it.

Take your power supply along for the ride to have it checked at the same time.

Check your laptop's AC adapter. Ensure the laptop's AC adapter is snugly plugged into the port on the back of the . Also, check its connection into either the wall socket or the surge protector, depending on your setup. Make sure the AC adapter is securely in one of these outlets and not loose. Also, if the adapter is plugged directly into the wall, try another outlet. Your existing outlet may be blown.

Check your monitor brightness settings. Sometimes these settings get accidentally turned all the way down, which results in what appears to be a dead laptop battery or malfunctioning power supply, but is really just a simple fix. Your laptop has dedicated brightness keys at the top of the keyboard, directly above the numeric keys. Adjust the brightness settings here.

3 Look at the battery indicator light if your laptop appears to be out of battery or suffering a power failure. If it is not flashing or indicating a power problem, your laptop's "LCD closed switch" may be malfunctioning. This switch acts as a sensor which normally judges whether your laptop is open or closed. Sometimes this switch gets stuck in the "closed" position, resulting in the laptop believing it is shut and thus the monitor's back-light staying off. This switch is located right beside either the left or right hinge at the bottom of your laptop's display . Tap this switch multiple times with your finger to attempt to free it up and get it out of the closed position.

Consider whether your laptop's battery has completely died and needs to be replaced. Average laptop batteries last for approximately 1000 charges, after which point they either gradual deteriorate and have trouble holding a charge, or simply fail altogether.
Eventually your laptop's battery will have to replaced, and if none of the other troubleshooting steps yielded results this is likely the source of your perceived power supply problems. Flip over your laptop and locate the horizontal outline of the battery, which will be at the top center of the bottom of your computer.

Notice the battery release mechanism on the bottom of your laptop, which should be directly below the horizontal outline of the battery. Slide this release mechanism to the left to disengage the battery and gently pop it out. The laptop's power supply may now be replaced.

Battery icon showing 0% available (plugged in, charging). I did not use laptop for roughly 3-4 weeks. I also did not notice any quick battery loss prior to this when not plugged in.

    Hi

I would be tempted to leave laptop switched off and turn power plug on to charge up the battery before i use it for a couple of hrs at least and hopefully this will put some charge into the battery

they say that if you continously use the laptop with the power cord plugged in then you could
remove the battery completly to extend the battery life and just use the cord

that way the battery will last many years longer

Remove the battery and just leave it off the computer, then plug in the power cord and try it. If it works with no battery...the battery is completely dead and you need to replace.

Power button inop at times & Power connection loose

Hi kimicob. From what you have described, it sounds like your AC adapter (power cord) is bad. This is a common problem with laptops. I have had to replace mine 3 times! Depending on what type of laptop you have, you can probably find a generic power cord online for less than $30. Or you can go to the laptop company's website and buy one from them, but it will cost much more, if they still carry it. You can try newegg.com or tigerdirect.com or just do a google search for AC adapter and the model of your laptop. Best of luck!

Won't turn on, but the charge icon blinks 3 times

It has enough juice in the battery to light up the lcd lights but not enough to turn it on. Could be the power supply. Consult a reputable service center and have it checked out. Good luck.

My PC won't run with ac /dc power!

Hello. There is a hardware failure with the laptop not the AC charger. AC chargers have some range of protections of their own. If the power requirements of the laptop are bigger then what the charger can handle, the charger will turn off. Also other parameters can bring the charger offline. In your case, you have a problem with a small chip, the battery charge controller unit, witch regulates the amount of current required to propperly charge the battery. When this thing fails, the charging requirements for the battery are reported rong and the AC charger is forced to give more power then necesary. This results in disconnection of the AC charger ( an internal fail safe of the AC charger) and the laptop to swich back to battery power. When the laptop is turned off, it can charge the battery because the power requirements are low, having all processor, main board, hard disk etc turned off. Therefore the AC charger can handle the load. However you will need to have it checked by a service center as it is a hardware fault. Both AC charger and laptop needs that check. The charge controll circuit needs to be replaced probably. It will be a somewhat expensive repair. Don't buy any other battery untill you have the laptop checked. For more aditional info please post back. PS. Sorry for my bad english, I am from Romania, it is pretty hard for me to explain tehnical stuff in english.
