  • Lightnen1 Oct 26, 2008

I was using the other day, when I parked my car I shut off the TomTom. Came back in about 1/2hr. and started it up tomtom could not find a signal. I waited for a while but still no signal. So shut it off. When I got home I tried it again, still nothing, so I put back to factory setting and tried again. put in all my home setting but unit can not find gps setting it says. Have left it on and drained battery still nothing..

Do a soft reset by holding the power button down for 15 seconds. you may need to power off and on afterwards. this is what I did on mine and it works again just fine. I did loose all my stored info.

I had this problem. I did a factory reset and the unit started working again (yes, I lost all my settings, but what good is a GPS unit that just sits there waiting for a valid GPS signal?). To do a factory reset, go to menu -> change preferences -> Reset factory settings.

My tomtom did it for two days, and then I turned it on one morning, and it worked! I do not understand it, but keep trying to get it to work, hopefully yours will just start working again!

I returned mine to the store I purchased from luckaly I'd only had it for 2 weeks and they replaced it. The could not explain why I was not getting a good signal for it was looking and had bars in the configureation area but they were all gray not bluse like they should be. This new one seems to work..

On the bottom right hand side press the bars, next screen press the middle right hand sideellow the bars , then top right hand side is the orange and black disc spinning? yes then your unit is looking for a signal , if no then ask tom tom website for instructions,

I had the same problem when I bought it. I fixed it.

The problem is the person that is using it. Just make sure the GPS is charged, and make sure it gets updated/upgraded every week for for free at tomtom home, so that it could track satellite movements. Is written on the manual and at tomtom home.

I had the same problem. I fixed it.

The problems is that you have to connect it every week to TOMTOM Home for updates. It has to update the maps and Satellite movements.

GPS is not working. It says waiting for a valid GPS signal. What can I do to fix this?

Usually, when it's waiting to get a valid GPS signal, it is "listening" (scanning) for satellite signals to establish your current location. If you are in the open outdoors, i.e. not inside a building or under extended covers, it should get the satellite signals within a minute or so.

Can't get any directions, just keeps on saying "waiting for valid GPS signal" been like this all day. Thanks. Ron

charge it up good for a few hours, preferably the usb cord to your computer, then power it on and take it outside in full view of the open sky and let it aquire the satellites (up to 30 minutes)

if that fails, let me know and we can try a reset and update.

Waiting for a valid gps signal

A couple solutions:

1) Make sure the TomTom can "see" the sky well... the GPS satellite waves are rather weak and easily blocked by trees, and anything not a window.

2) Hook up your TomTom to the computer (see details at www.tomtom.com or in the manual)

2b) Do a "sync" and download all updates. One of the updates is a small file that tells the TomTom where the satellites are located this week, and helps it sync up much faster. The longer time between uses, the longer it takes TomTom to find the satellites, and that can takes up to 2-5 minutes sometimes.

That can be frustrating with a car full of people waiting to get going and the driver doesn't want to drive without making sure the TomTom works and is giving valid directions.

The GPS needs at least 3 satellite signals to operate. You are probably in a bad reception area. Move around a bit and try again until you see a signal array of 3 or more!

My tomtom cant find any satellites and keeps saying waiting on valid gps signal......

check the port is set to 8
not sure if your model has GPS search wher it finds the port and vbaude automativcally, if it does use it and see if that fixes it if not
your battery is too low
you have a damaged SIIRF chip and that is expensive to repair

Waiting for valid gps signal

Go to TomTom Home on your computer and do a update for your unit. In the update list you should see a GPS quick fix which helps the TomTom's aquire a signal faster. Hope this helps.
