Question about Sony KP-51WS510 51" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

Sony KP-51WS510 51 in. Dark Picture

I have the Sony KP-51WS510 , maybe 4yrs. old. The picture gets dark as it warms up, brightness is cranked all the way up, and the picture (contrast I guess) is all the way down. Cleaned the lenses and mirror for only minor improvement. It has a decent picture at start up, but after about 5 minuts it begins to get darker. Mostly the dark scenes tend to loose definition.Could this be something getting hot? Ned

Same deal here. I've had this tv for almost five years and in the past year, the picture darkens as it warms up. I bought an extended warranty from Best Buy when I bought it. They sent a technician out a year ago who said the bulbs were getting dim. He took it apart, cleaned it and said he'd be back in a week. Well, it was two weeks, and he just fiddled around with an adjustment. He said something about turning up the voltage? It was better when he left, but now it's back to where it was before. Any ideas?

These sets have been known to have loose welds in the picture tubes. Most likely your tubes are showing this problem.

I would get a second opinion from a local servicer as well. It is always best to see the problem in person. If one tube is going bad, the other two will follow shortly. When the picture darkens, is one color (red, green, or blue) more predominant?

Well, that is good news. I will check with Sony tech assist first thing tomorrow morning.

Sony warms up - picture slowly becomes dark

You are losing screen voltage or whats called the boast voltage most likely. This is probably being caused by a bad capacitor in the sweep power supply. You will need to get a service manual as well as use an ESR type capacitor meter to find the bad capacitor(s). Good Luck
