Question about Projection Televisions

1 Answer

Hello, I have a 1996 Sony rear projection TV and just recently the set will shut off on it's own. If you try and turn the set back on you have to hit the power button "on the set" twice before it will turn on again. The red "stand by" light turns on and then the set will take numerous tries for it to actually stay on. It will just keep shutting off repeatedly unless you wait for a while. Then even if you wait a while it only stays on for two min. or so before it shuts off again. Somedays though it will work just fine. Could this be a simple fix? Something like a relay or a fan is going out and something is getting too warm and shutting off? The model no. on my set is KP-46S25. I know this is an old set but I just had a child and would prefer not spending what it would cost to replace this set, thank you in advance for any help.

Thank you for such a quick response. No I don't think I've seen either of those problems "yet". If this were the problem how would I go about checking to see if any welds were loose? Is there any dangerous areas to avoid if I open the box? Last but not least are these bulbs expensive to replace? Can I do the installation myself?

These sets have had picture tube problems. Have you ever seen the color change, or lines across the picture before it shuts down? If you have, then you have one or more picture tubes going bad. These pic tubes have been known to have loose welds in the gun assembly. Let me know.

To check the tubes, remove the front speaker grill. Most of these sets had a small screw at the bottom of the left and right side of the grill to remove. Then remove the access panel. With the set running, carefully tap the neck of each tube to see if the picture has lines or changes color. Tap just above the picture tube socket printed circuit board. If you see any change, that picture tube is bad.

Stuck in video1 and video 6 mode. Can't get to tv

ok, all sony sets for the last 20 years or so have had a reset feature that ought to clear this up:

Set turned off and using Sony original remote:

Display, 5, volume up, power-----listen carefully this should take you to the tech menu.

hit 8 and reset should appear on the screen in red

hit enter and the reset should turn to green and set shut off.

Turn back on and see if it cured the issue or not.

Sony kp 51hw40 rear projector turn off problem .

T8005 etc is NOT the issue.

This set was prone to bad picture tubes (has 3) and can flash bright blue (most common) and set when this happens detects too much current being drawn and shuts down.

There is a fairly easy way to try to deal with this and return set operation to fairly normal.

Not technical and no parts are needed.

Let me know if you want to know with a comment here and I will explain.

TV Turns Off On Its Own

Hi,
Standby light flashing is error sign and shows tv got problem some where in its circuit boards.
You will notice 3 seconds long pause between red standby light flashing so count pause to pause and post how many times it flashing to diagnose problem of tv.
Thanks.

Problem for Sony Grand WEGA KDF-55WF655. Hello,

5 times Red LED blinks means Lamp Driver Error. (KDF-55WF655)
2 possible reasons, either Lamp is gone or Ballast Supply got bad.
Replace lamp first, in most cases it solved the problem.
How old is this TV and did you replaced lamp recently?
Thanks.
