Laptop or desktop, download this tool:
http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpuz_144.zip
Extract the cpuz.exe and .ini and run the exe. When it opens, click the 'SPD' tab and look at the 'Max Bandwidth' line. That will tell you waht kind you have.
Just remember, laptop ram is physically smaller than desktop ram.

There are several websites you can go to. Some have a wizard you can enter the type and model of your computer and they'll tell you what to get. Just do a search until you find one.
