MAXTOR EXTERNAL HD IS NOT OPENING

Does it give you an error message ? Are you running Windows XP or Vista? If so post it here so the problem can be further narrowed down.
You might want to try a chkdsk.

In Windows XP and Vista both, a shortcut to get to the command console is holding the Windows Key and pressing R.

in the command console, type:
chkdsk X: /f /r

Where X is the drive letter of the drive giving you problems.

This will run a chkdsk on your external, restoring files and folders that cannot be accessed.

I also have a Maxtor External hard drive and have to do this quite often. It's pretty frustrating.

Can't detect an external Hard drive (Maxtor 1TB)

im going to assume your on XP for these instructions. other wise you still need to do the same thing.

right click the my computer desktop or the start menu. go down to properties. open the hardware tab. open the device manager. Scroll down to it, remove the driver, just delete the whole entry. unplug the hard drive, then plug it in again. See if that works.

hope this will fixya....

Installing the external drive

In XP and Vista no need to install.
They will detect automatically.
To know, goto Windows explorer.
Find drive letter other than your local drive.
Usually called "removable disk".

Code 10

Windows error code 10 indicates a hardware error or failed driver installation. This error may appear if a device has insufficient power to operate correctly (e.g. plugged into a bus powered hub with other devices), or may indicate a more serious hardware problem. Also, it may be indicative of USB root hub drivers being incorrectly installed.
