Question about Thermador SMW272 Electric Double Oven

Dimming temperature and clock light on display window

The light on the display window indicating temperature has become steadily dimmer and is now almost unreadable. Clock lights are also dimming. The oven reaches the desired temperatures, so the thermastat and oven function are OK. We have recently been baking bread at temps of about 550 degrees. Could high heat have affected the lights? Oven instructions do not address replacement of bulbs on the display window. Display lights dimmed and then dissapeared. Everything functions, I'm just flying blind. Can we fix it ourselves? Identical problem

Where is the panel board and how do I access it?

  • Ballet66 Apr 18, 2008

Thermador SMW272 single electic oven. Upon touching the "bake" pad: "bake" does not illuminate in the display window; current time remains displayed; bake temperature can be entered but does not display in the dispay window; oven turns on and tone sounds when temperature is achieved; at no time does oven temperature display.

Thank you for the suggestion. I tried this as it was the easiest. Did not make any difference.

It is not heating damaging the display, if is a factory fault that affects all Thermador owens.
To fix it you will have to get a new display/relay board package, which cost is about $200/250. If you decide to have it repalced by a service company, the total will start from around $400. The display is really easy to change by itself, but you must change the realy board with it, which has about 40 different wires going to it. If you draw a diagram as you take the wires off, and label them carefully, it isn't that hard to do the whole job.
Being a reccurrent problem with this brand you can try calling thermadore and see if they are willing to at least send you the replacement parts with no additional cost.
In fact if you search inside thermador owen problems, you will find that 80% of posts are regarding same display problem.

Remove the cover and unplug and replug ever connection you can find. Sometimes the slightest bit of corrosion will cause a voltage drop across a connector. That drop is all it takes to cause problems downstream. By disconnecting and reconnecting these plugs you burnish the contacts, that removes the corrosion reestablishing a good electrical connection. Sometimes it works.

there may be a short circuit or power bleed somewhere, If the first trick doesn work, I think there is nothing more you can do, you should perhaps take it to the technician...

Hi Ballet66

As far I know , you have to replace the whole panel once this happens.

It is quite a job , so I would suggest you to rather take it in for repair.

How do i operate the self cleaning function

Hello - Before using the self-cleaning cycle of the appliance, remove the broiler pan and any utensils stored in the appliance. Also remove any excess spillovers in the oven cavity. Allow the oven to cool before cleaning. During the self-cleaning cycle, the outside of the wall oven can become very hot to the touch.

Typically to set the controls for a self-clean the first step is to confirm that the clock shows the correct time of the day. Press CLEAN. "---" appears in the display. Press the UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW once. "3:00" appears in the display for a 3 hour cycle. To change to a 2 hour cycle press DOWN ARROW"2:00" appears in the display. As soon as the controls are set, the motor drive lock will begin to close automatically and the "LOCK" indicator light will flash. DO NOT open the oven door while the light is flashing (it takes about 15 seconds for the over door to lock). "CLn" will appear in the display during the Self-Clean cycle and the "LOCK" light will glow until the Self-Cleaning cycle is complete or cancelled and the oven temperature has cooled.

When the Self-Clean cycle has completed, the time of the day or "End" will appear in the display window and the "Clean" and "LOCK" light will continue to glow. Once the over has cooled down for about 1 HOUR and the "LOCK" light has gone out, the oven door can be opened. If "End" is the display and the Clean indicator light remains ON, press CLEAR/OFF. The time of the day will appear in the display.

If it becomes necessary to stop or interrupt a Self-Cleaning cycle, press CLEAR/OFF. Once the oven has cooled down for about 1 HOUR and the "LOCK" light has gone out, the oven door can be opened. Restart the Self-Clean cycle once all conditions have been corrected.

Fault codes F1 and F2

Just two work there:
1.- Replace the touchpad or the clock (ERC) if the code "F1" is displayed. Disconnect the ribbon connector to the touchpad. If no code is displayed after an hour, replace the touchpad. If the code displays again, replace the clock.
2.- Replace the oven temperature sensor if "F2," "F3" or "F4" is displayed. "F2" indicates the oven temperature is too hot and the oven temperature sensor is suspect. "F3" or "F4" indicates the oven temperature sensor or shorted or open.

I have a Fisher & Paykel OS302. The temperature and oven mode selects are dead, no LED display, no operation. The clock module is working. This happened all at once, I tried to turn it on and both...

This sounds as if the electronic clock timer is in automatic mode. It must be in manual mode for the oven to work. Turn the oven on and play around with the timer controls/buttons. When the oven indicator light comes on the clock is in manual mode.

Display panel

Dim display indicates a "failing" electronic oven control. It will continue to get dimmer and dimmer until it fails completely. You need to replace the "clock" (sometimes called the ERC <---Electronic Oven Control)

This is a tricky repair. Be sure you have the power off (at the breaker box) before attempting this.

Dimming temperature and clock light on display window

I found capacitor c3 (68 uf 35 volt) had leaked and dried up, causing the display to fail. I unsoldered and tested c1, c4, c7, and made sure they were good, using a digital multimeter with the ability to test capacitors. C3 also had visible signs of leakage. Works like a charm again, and the display is bright like new!
