I would like to inform you that every All-In-one has the power saving mode that could be set on the front panel. When the power saving mode is set, the All-In-One automatically turns off the scanner bulb after some time..
(1) Press the setup button on the All-In-One. (2) Press 7 for Maintenance >> Press 6 for Set Power Save Mode Time. (3) Set the power saving mode to 1 hour.
With this setup, the All-In-one turns off the scanner bulb after one hour.

First diagnose if the line comes when using the doc feeder or the glass. If it only comes when using the doc feeder then you have a small dirt spot on the glass where the page is scanning over the exposure lamp. Just clean it.
When printing from the microsoft word document, make sure the printer selected is right. By that, i mean the default printer selected in the printers icon under the control panel should be HP OfficeJet 6100 series and not HP OfficeJet 6100 fax.
So the reason why this message comes up " scanner failure ". is you are either selecting a wrong printer when printing from microsoft word document or probably the printer port is not selected right.
To check the printer port.
Click on start-->control panel-->printer & faxes-->right click on HP OfficeJet 6100 series--> select properties-->Select the top tab called ports-->
Check the ports selected here.
If you have a USB connected printer it should be your printer model with USB settings.
If you have a wireless connected printer it should be your printer model with wireless settings like IP address.
i can understand the situation here is the soluition for you :
1.TRY TO MAKE A COPY 2.if the copy does not happen open the scanner glass and check whether the scanner lamp that is tdo you see any light in the glass glowing or moving
3.if nothing gloes or move then i am sorry to say that you will only be able to print from the printer and nothing else
4.if the printer is in warranty call hp they replace it for you .............................. thank you and hope you do see the scanner lamp
If you can remove the glass, you need to clean the lamp and mirrors in the scan assembly, this error happens after the lamp ages and dust gathers on the scan mirrors. It's very expensive if you can even find a new scan assembly.
