Sounds like your lcd inverter is going bad. If you check e-bay for your model computer, you should be able to find a new/used inverter for under $25.00

Are you sure that the display is not set for external monitor only? Also take bright flashlight and shine on the display. If you can see the images then the problem is with the back light and usually caused by a bad inverter. Some times you can get the back light or inverter bu most times it is easier and cheaper to replace the entire display.
More than likely the screen. The inverter normally causes things on the desktop to be barely visible. The whole screen looks black, but with a flashlight you can see the images are there when the inverter is bad.

Try to adjust the back-light on the screen by pressing the FN and UP arrow to increase the light.
If that does not work then it means that your back-light on the screen has either failed completely of works for a couple of minutes and then it goes off. You need to have your screen replaced with a new one.
Make sure you have not accidentally used the FN+F5 key
That combination sets the laptop to use an external display.
If using that does not give you a display take a small torch (flashlight if in USA) and shine it at an angle on the laptop screen.
If you can see any sort of picture you would be looking at replacement of some minor parts to the laptop screen

It sounds like the back-light in your laptop's LCD screen has died. If you turn the laptop on, and hold the screen up to the light, you may be able to see the operating system and windows, but since the screen isn't emitting any light, it appears to be off or all black. If this is the case, you'll need to either replace the back-light, have the laptop repaired, or replace the whole thing. There's no easy fix for a dead back-light.
