Question about Brother MFC-8440 All-In-One Laser Printer

Low toner/toner empty

I've had this printer for several years with no problem. I've been using re-fills for some time as well. Recently, I got the toner empty message. I inserted a new re-filled cartridge. Now I still get the toner empty message. I've taken the cartridge back to the refill place to verify it has toner in it. The only solution that I can come up with is to remove the cartridge & drum unit for some time. When I insert back in, it will work but has the low toner warning on the screen.

I kept getting the dreaded Empty Toner warning which essentially locks up and makes your machine unusable.  I used a little logic and applied the tape from previous Brother cartridges that is over the fill hole and it worked like a charm.  I'm pretty sure any tape would work as I cannot see a magnetic device in the tape they use.  It's obviously a proprietary technique to keep people following the above advice and but more Brother Cartridges.  Buy refill kits and tape the plug holes my friends!

Toner cartridges have more then just "toner ink" they also have developer and sometimes a chip that says how many times the cartridge has been used.
Also some refill places can be a bit dodgy so I know it might not seem like the best thing right now but try buying a real replacement cartridge and if that doesn't do it beg and plead to return it saying it was the wrong model.
If it does fix it then you might have a bad cartridge that either has the "chip" or the cartridge itself is simply worn out and in need of developer as well.

SAVIN C7570 BLACK INK PRINTS FADED (INCONSISTENT)

Hi Linda
Is this ink or toner? Ink will expire if it is on a shelf too long. Toner is a powder that is applied with heat to the paper. It does not expire but will appear faded if the printer is in economy mode or low on toner. on a 4 drum system each drum is independent of the others and can run low or out at separate times. Therefor to save money only replace the empty drums. Have you changed the drum recently? If it is toner try removing it and shaking it, then reinsert it. If you have other boxes of this drum see if you can find a date on the box. ink over three years old may not work well.

Tip

How-To Save hundreds of dollars by using all the toner in your HP-2550 series...

Most laser printers on the market today use a computer chip to tell the printer/computer when it's empty. The chip does not have any kind of physical sensor to tell whether the toner is actually low or not, instead it keeps track of how many pages were printed using the toner cartridge. (there is a separate chip on each cartridge, so in a color printer there are 4 chips one of each color and one on the black)

The chips tell your printer/computer that they are low or empty long before the toner is actually low or empty. If you replace them when the computer tells you to you are throwing away a lot of good toner.

To make things worse, the printers will not print at all (color or b/w) once it believes that one of the cartridges is empty.

There are 2 ways to 'trick' your printer into not believing that a cartridge is empty.

(Solution 1)
The chips that are on the cartridges can be swapped out with new ones. There are several vendors that sell aftermarket chips for your 2550 toner cartridges. Do a general search for 2550 reset chip and you will find vendors that sell reset chips. You can also find them on eBay for around $20-$25 a set.

The chips themselves are very simple to replace. Use a small screwdriver and pry off the old chip. They are just held in place with a strong piece of double sided tape. If the old tape is still there and good, you can just put the new chip in it's place, otherwise stick the new one on with some double sided tape.

This trick can also be used to extend the life of your printer drum, as you can buy reset chips for it as well.

(Solution 2) A bit clunky, but this one is free
You can literally trick your printer into not reading the info from the chip and thus not stopping you from printing. This solution is not as nice and clean as the first one, but it does work and it's free. You will have to repeat this solution from time to time if the printer stops working.
  • Step 1: Power off your HP2550 printer.
  • Step 2: While the printer is off, press and hold the big green button on the printer.
  • Step 3: While still pressing the green button, power the printer back on using the power button (lower back corner on the left side of the printer).
  • Step 4: Continue to hold the green button while the printer initializes. During this time all of the front lights will turn on one at a time and then all but the first green light (the ready light) will turn off one at a time - this step can take several minutes to be patient and keep holding the green button.
  • Step 5: When all the lights have turned off except the front green light, release the big green button. The front lights with flash a few time, while they are flashing, press and release the red circle button 1 time.
  • Step 6: You may have to reload the printer driver at this point. If your computer has detected new hardware then go ahead and reinstall the driver.
Be aware
  • Some of the back cartridge lights (the back 4) may stay on or flash, this is OK.
  • The front green 'Ready' light will no longer be on, again this is OK.
  • If at any time your printer stops printing all together, then go through these steps again. I have had to redo this about 10 times over the past 2 1/2 years. It is a nuisance, but it saves a great deal of money.
  • If this does not work the first time then try it again. Each step must be done in order and correctly otherwise it does not work.
I have had my printer for almost 3 years now. The original cartridges that came with my printer stopped working because they told the printer they were empty about 2 1/2 years ago. I started doing this at that time and all 4 of mine (I have a 2550 color printer) are all still working and have not started to fade, so there was a lot of toner left when my printer said it was empty.

I have an ir6570 giving me an error code e0013, e0004 please help

This is an error code dealing with the toner auger motor being bound up. Has the waste toner message been on for along time and the waste toner bottle not being emptied. Sometimes the waste toner counter has been reset several times without the bottle being emptied. This will cause the waste toner to back up in the auger mechanism. Thsi will have to be taken apart ( very tedious job ) and the toner removed from the tube. The auger spring and even some gears may have to be replaced. I've never had to replace the motor on any copier yet. Good Luck.

Hi

There might be a problem with the paper sensor. Check the rear portion of the printer where you get the paper out try to open the back of the printer and check if the sensor is working well. Usually it will be stuck and need to be released. And if you can just give a little bang on the back of the printer this may cause the sensor to trip and start working.

Low print quality

It depends upon the number of prints you have done since Feb and the toner cartridge capacity. Some toner cartridges have 2500 page capacity others have 5000 pages or more.
If you think you have not exceeded or reached the cartridge capacity, take it out of the printer and give it a shake in a horizontal position to distribute the toner evenly across the drum and place it back in the printer. This also works when the toner is nearly empty.

The Dell 1700 cartridge can leak from a failed mylar blade that sits against the Developer Roller.

The plastic locking ring on the and of the Developer roller spindle (of the toner cartridge) can come loose, or break (over time).

The drum unit has a relatively low capacity to hold waste toner, and all toner is not the same (waste toner shouldn't be re-used - it will just fill up the waste section of the drum even faster). Some toners are more efficient than others.

If you reset the 'replace drum' indication, without actually replacing it (or at least emptying it) you will soon have the drum over-full of waste toner, and the only other place it can go then, is inside the printer, and onto the paper.
