Push the menu button (the one one with the file folder) until "search" is displayed. Push the down arrow key 10 times until "advanced menu" is displayed. Push the right arrow button until "format" is displayed, select "Format ok" and push the play button. Problem solved.

Hi nancy ties...
Your songs you have downloaded to your player is the wrong format.
You will have to change the format of the songs that is compatible to your mp3 player.
You can see your specs at this webpage:

Make sure the 2gb is really up to 2gb because sometimes they might just stretch it and say its 2gb. How to know is, if you put one or two songs it will accept and play but once its more... they start showing you format error....

When I try to listen to a song on my Insignia mp3 player, it is saying that there is an error opening the file? But it shows that I have synced the songs onto the player.

Make sure that the Mp3 player is formatted correctly. Plug it into the computer and in the My Computer screen right click the device, from the pull down format select Format and choose FAT32. This will wipe all the songs from the player, so add new songs, turn on the player and see if it works. If it doesn't plug the player back in and Format it again with the regular FAT setting.

Your songs are in the wrong format - read my "tips and tricks" on song formats, as it is too complicated to explain here. Short answer: convert the songs to Mp3 format.

Try formatting the device again using its built-in formatting features.

(WARNING: There is no way you can retrieve your data. Since it has already been formatted, it's assumed that you have backup.)

In your Sony NW-E405 MP3 Player:
1. Press and hold the SEARCH/ MENU button
2. Go to ADVANCED MENU (press the Play/ Stop button)
3. Select FORMAT (press Play/ Stop button)
4. From the opt "Format OK?" select OK (press the Play/ Stop button)
5. Once finished, you can Cancel out.

After these steps, your device should screen out "No Data." From there, you can re-transfer your files.

NWWM MEM AAD2 is playing up!!

Go to Sony for software. Others:
The format of the songs are wrong in one way or another. Each Mp3 player has a product spec sheet that lists which type of music file it is compatible with (Mp3, WMA, WAV, AAC, etc). You can't play iTunes songs, which are AAC format, on a player that only accepts Mp3 or WMA format.

The second formatting issue has to do with the DRM license on the songs you have downloaded. Right click a song that gave you an error, click on "Properties," and click on the "License," "Media Usage Rights," or "Digital Rights Mgmt" tab (wording varies by configuration). Not every song allows unlimited or even one-time transfer to a "portable device" (code word for "Mp3 player" in this case). Also, some songs are fixed-term - they expire after a while - sometimes in as little as 24 hours.

To get around this, convert every song to Mp3 format. Either that, or upgrade your music service subscription to the highest pkg they have available and never cancel (Napster's basic music svc, for instance, does not let you transfer to an Mp3 player, but their "Napster To Go" upgrade does allow transfer).
