When we went to get some ice cream out of the freezer last night, and we found that everything was almost all thawed out....some things were still frozen though. When taking the food out, we noticed that the bottom 3 shelves were free from any frost but the top shelf was full. The steaks we had up there looked like they were packed in snow towards the back. I defrosted top shelf and cleaned the whole thing out. We turned the freezer back on and it was rather loud for about the first minute or maybe less but then sounded like the normal humm you hear. We put a bottle of water on each shelf to see if they were frozen in the morning. When we checked it this morning, the water bottles were not frozen but the freezer was cold. Since the freezer was not full of food, would it take longer than overnight for the water to freeze? There is a coil that weaves back and forth sandwiched between each shelf....on the top shelf, the back coil was frosted over starting from the rear corner and continuing across the back of the freezer and then around the first "u" turn and about 4 inches back the other way...then it just stopped. None of the other shelves or the front part of the top shelf showed any frost or signs of cooling.
Do you have any idea what could be wrong and does it sound like something my husband and I could fix ourselves? (he's pretty handy)
I haven't cleaned the coils yet but plan on doing that this morning to see if that makes a difference.
The freezer is from Sears and is about 15 years old.
Thank you for any help you could offer.

My freezer was working fine up until last week it is under 10 years old. Last week we had a minor electrical fire. After this happened my freezer stopped working properly can anyone suggest anything it also is a Sears model and I live in a rural area and I don't want to pay more for a repair job than I did for the freezer.
The exact same thing is happening to my Sears Kenmore upright. The top shelf still works and has frost on it. The lower 3 shelves with coils are not cooling at all. My sister had the same problem with the same freezer 5 years ago and the repair guy told them this should never happen and somehow got the service call paid for by Sears. The problem is ours is like 10 years old now and we don't have the original receipt (our parents bought them for both of us as house warming gifts). I tried to find out if there was a recall on the gov't site but couldn't find anything. It seems like a manufacturing defect to me. We've never had any electrical problems or anything. I don't want to spend a bunch of cash on an older freezer, but I'd rather not buy a new one if I don't have to. Any Suggestions?
It's like there was after on in the freezer and everything froze. Looks like icicles hanging down from shelves. All over the door everywhere in freezer. I cleaned it and went back 3-4 hours later and it was the same way again.
