Trouble sharing pixma ip3000

I'm trying to connect my Canon Pixma ip3000 to a network. I've followed the directions step by step. When I get to the part to configure on the print server computer (add port) it says that it cannot be shared using that port. I've tried different ports but with no luck.

You can share your printer as a shared printer on your network. This computer and the attached printer must be on at all times to allow other computers on your network to print on this printer.
Please click on this link and follow my instructions on how to setup a shared printer :

Remove the print head and try powering it up. If it powers up, then your print head is shorted and will need cleaning or replacing.

Using the Canon PIXMA MP240 printer wirelessly

In order to do this, the laptops have to be able to communicate with each other wirelessly. I.e., you have to have a wireless network set up. If you do, then you are "printer sharing", using one laptop as the 'printer server' (with the printer connected to it) and the other as the 'client'. Step by step instructions are available at this link. Type "printer sharing" in the search box in the center of the screen and click on the Search button. Select the option that matches your requirements.
