I'm trying to connect my Canon Pixma ip3000 to a network. I've followed the directions step by step. When I get to the part to configure on the print server computer (add port) it says that it cannot be shared using that port. I've tried different ports but with no luck.

In order to do this, the laptops have to be able to communicate with each other wirelessly. I.e., you have to have a wireless network set up. If you do, then you are "printer sharing", using one laptop as the 'printer server' (with the printer connected to it) and the other as the 'client'. Step by step instructions are available at this link. Type "printer sharing" in the search box in the center of the screen and click on the Search button. Select the option that matches your requirements.
It depends on the operating system you are using. If you are using XP.Make sure your printer is connected to the system.Click on start, printers and faxes, add printer. Follow the instructions that follow.
