Question about Hitachi 42HDT52 42 in. Plasma HDTV

Open Question

Hitachi 42HDT52A I saw that you answered some questions on this set so I was hoping you could help me. I ordered this set from Hitachi's authorized refurb center, UEC WEB, and well the first day out of the box I was having an issue with it. When I inserted my cable card, I got a message said that failure to authorize 1040. I called Hitachi customer support and they are telling me this problem requires a new "Digi" board. I think I saw where you listed this part as a 350 dollar part. I have a 30 day parts and labor warranty on this. Hitachi is offering to send someone out to fix the set or to replace it with another one. What would you suggest? Is this a bad sign of things to come? I am at a standstill of whether I should ask for the replacement unit or just get this one fixed? Anything you could advise would be appreciated. Thanks

SOURCE: Hitachi won't replace

I had the same problem a red halo that eventually led to complete discoloration. I called Hitachi and they had their local rep come out and look, they said it would cost $400 to install $1500 new light engine. Then a couple of months ago, I read a post on this site (Varian - Feb. 14, 2008 - suggesting Hitachi Customer Relations at 800-654 7013 was providing the light engine without charge).

So, I called them again and was not able to persuade them to cover my Hitachi LCD projection (50V500). It appears Hitachi has a poor record with their Light Engine as well all of their new generation TV. They have since stopped selling the LCD projection, but they are into plasma and LCD TV and likewise do not seem to have a good track record - as I hear from other users.

I did the smart thing and switched over to a Sony XBR4 Bravia 52" LCD TV 1080p HD at a reduced price (Approximately $2800 from!). My Hitachi cost me about $ 3600 at a Circuit City Store. Therefore, no Hitachi products for me and not from Circuit City, since, Circuit City asked for $4000 for the same Sony TV, I bought from Amazon, which included delivery and installation. Circuit City would add another $80 for delivery.

HITACHI really sucks!!! Put these people out of business!

I would strongly suggest that you see what kind of a tech you have asking for the replacement... My industry is flooded with too many have-solder-gun will travel wany-to-be techs. And Hitachi is VERY particular who they do business with... If they even suspect that the tech who asked about the part is not capable of installing it properly that may be the problem....
I do know that that program is still ongoing. We did one as recently 7/20 and had no problems getting the part...
Don't really think Hitachi is trying to single you out - - so you might check that out..

We have used the flat ribbon cables from a computer center in the past. Take the old one to a shop and see if they can accommodate you. Maybe they can modify one that will work. Let me know.

One station only has lost sound but piture is great. All other channels work fine.

Have you tried retuning the TV? You may need to do a Full Factory Reset tuning rather than just a rescan.

Rescan simply looks at the place holders where the old channels were stored and refreshes them. A Factory Reset (A.K.A. Shipping Condition) wipes the channel memories and starts again fresh.

Where is MTS button located? On TV or remote? Hitachi 42HDT52A

It's not on the remote. It's in the Menus on the TV.

Go in to the Audio Menu, and scroll down to Audio Sources. This will allow you to change between Mono, Stereo and SAP.

My Samsung plasma tv is only around 4yrs old and suddenly started going from normal to dimmer projection, flickering between the two, is there a way to fix it or should I get a new tv

I have seen this in Samsung sets before, the flickering is likely a jumper in the power supply that needs to be removed, they had this issue on a number of sets---a jumper in the power supply (that board) likely is causing this, someone else here did post the location but search the model number with google for flickering and you may find it, it was widespread and as a last resort call Samsung or even a authorized service center.

I hope this helps and if you want (I spend a lot of time and effort answering questions here and if you get me the full model number I will research it when I get a chance, answer about 600 questions here a week.

Google the model number with "flickering" and I bet you can find a lot of info.

Happy holidays, Temp here is 11 degrees F right now but warm now inside the house.

My hitachi 50v500 has double letters/numbers... picture doesnt seem to be alligned properly? Everything has a matching shadow just to the left.

I am answering this because I know this set and do not like the answers you have received.

If you see a slight "ghost" to the left or right of lettering--it can be corrected with the remote--there is a exact way to do this--I have done it before and have instructions based on a service bulletin from Hitachi.

Confirm you have the ghosting to right or left of letters and I would be happy to post the instructions to correct that--all of it is done with the Hitachi remote that came with the set.

If you decide to do it I will give you the instructions and help you do it.

I have helped 4 other people here with the exact same set and problem.

Understand that not all people here know what they are talking about-I am sorry you got a poor answer, but I know this set well.

You want to fix it for free? I can help you.

Keep in mind I am in California and possible time differences.

Regards, SD TECH

Hitachi tv no picture

It sounds like the tuner demodulator has failed. Many times I have found that it is cheaper to buy an external hi-def tuner than repair the one that is in the set. The fact that the tuner is finding channels but not displaying them is a good sign that the demodulator has failed. In one case I had with Sony rear projector, it would have been $800 to repair the internal hi-def tuner and the customer can buy an external tuner for $100-$200. Sorry if this is not the answer you wanted; if you fel this si a good response to your question, please be sure to rate me,. Thanks!

Light engine replacement

Good Day, tech;

Let's suspect poor cable connections or pinched, BUT I have received bad light engines. Make sure you ordered the correct Part Number. There are two (models) of them; check Model Number, some are 50V500 and 50V500A.

What's your input to indicate red or green???

Let me know if this helpful, big IRISH.
