There is no sound coming out from my Gateway M305CRV PC Notebook speaker and also no sound from the audio jack

The speakers on my Gateway M305CRV do not work, and headsets do not work through the sound jack. I've reintstalled the driver many times. Occassionally a crackly sound comes through the speakers. According to the system, the driver is functioning properly. Any suggestions?
Also, is there an external/accessory solution that works independently - without needing the laptop's driver? Thank you.
