Re: whirlpool washer motor hum
You may have a bad pump stuck take the pump back off you should be able to turn the pump by sticking your finger in the slot that it slides up on the motor shaft if it turns with a little resistance the pump is ok if it will not turn then it needs to be replaced
also check to make sure that the motor connector wiring is tight and the lid switch connector is tight also

It is not uncommon for the water pump to lock up causing the belt to burn and even melt the drive motor pulley. Tip the machine back and check the pump. It should be easy to turn. The bearing will lock slap up on these type pumps with nary a water leak. To replace the pump you need a 3/8th nutdriver and a pair of channel lock pliers. You remove 2 hoses and 3 bolts.
Hello. The older top load washers use up to 60 gallons of water per load. That said, also check your toilets as a leaking toilet can use tens of thousands of gallons per year. Here is a link that explains how to check your toilets and other items for leaks. Regards, Joe

It could be a swollen impeller inside the pump causing it to wear a hole in the plastic housing and making the humming noise .It,s fairley easy to replace as it clips on to the end of the motor.Hope this helps.
The OB indicates and out of balance condition has been detected by the motor control. You say this happens when the washer is empty also. One thing about the OB error is that the lid must be opened to clear the error and allow the washer to advance to the next part of the cycle. If the lid is not opened to adjust the clothes then the OB error will happen again.
If the OB error was cleared and the OB occurs with an empty load then the motor control has failed.
The drain pump must work. The image below shows how to run a diagnostic test to check the drain pump. Follow the instructions in the image below and check the drain pump operation. If the pump runs and the water does not drain then the sump is clogged. If the pump hums but does not run then the pump needs to be replaced.
is there any humming coming from under or front of your washer? whirlpool built machines for about 10 years now are "direct drive" ...the motor has a plastic coupling held in place by a rubberish plastic donut type of thing, its an inexpensive fix and there are videos on youtube on how its repaired..its under 10 bucks and usually cures any lack of agitation/ spinning ...i had a roper by whirlpool and once i replaced it from a parts machine i salvaged it was fine.. so check you motor coupler/ coupling and that maybe your answer, if not there is a set of wires and a cut off in back of the motor to prevent overheating, which may have tripped..also a good point to check.. good luck
is the pump gray or white? if it is gray then replace it.look where the pump mounts to the ,otor and see if there is a black line coming from the middle.this is probably where your leak is.
just change the pump.
Good luck. Mine did the same and they sent their technicians out to fix the problem. A&E comes out and replaces the tub ring. They told me the washer is now made with the tub ring in place. When he opened the washer up I noticed I now have rust inside my washer. I have spent a month trying to get Whirlpool to replace my washer but they will only replace parts. A&E came out to replace the tub ring and now my door creaks and my washer does not go back together correctly. Hopefully you can justreturn the washer to where you got it. Read other reviews on line. It sounds like this washer is a lemon. Sorry!
