Question about Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

I bought one pair of used Gem Sound speakers, each equiped with one 15" whoofer and 3 piezo Tweeter. The finish is gray carpet. I can't find any model number on them. The speaker terminals have: Gem Sound Corp - New York printed on. The center of the whoofer have Gem sound printed in white. I would like to know, the power handling capacity in Watts RMS for those speakers. James P

Hi,

Would you pls try here and see if any of the Gem Sound speakers shown resembles that of what you have. Should you be able to pin point the model, then the page would also be able to give you an idea as to the power handling capacity.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Yes, but you need to replace the entire speaker. The 1505 and 1508 use a different magnet though they look similar..

The tweeters are not working

The crossover caps may have failed, or the tweeters themselves burned out. Using a small 1.5 volt cell touched across the tweeter leads should produce a sound. If not- they are burned out.

How to remove the magnet from the tweeter horn in the PR15 Speakers so I can get to the 3 screws

Removing a magnet from a tweeter is oftten fatal to the voice coil or element in piezo drivers. If you can see the screws, often a right-angle driver may be able to remove them.

Specs refer to UNdistorted sound. Send square waves to any speaker and it will die eventually, perhaps even the amp.

You are more likely to blow up speakers with an under-powered amp pushed to hard than a monster amp running well within its capacity. Distortion percentages rise vertically once the amp's useful range is exceeded. Tweeters are usually the first casualties.

It's tweeter hunting time.

Need to find out which is the proper speaker wires for hook up yellow to tweeter or sub? And striped one is positive or negative?

You can probably trace which colors go to the smaller of the amps... Yellow is often used for tweeter but there really is no standard. Striped wire is probably the minus lead. If a pair is heavier, that would be the pair for the woofer... and red is often positive for woofer and black the minus. Searching the Mackie schematics doesn't really show colors. You could call their service dept.

Suddenly, my outdoor speakers sound kind of "muffled"

If these speakers are two or three way speakers, it is possible that the tweeter(s) are blown in them.
Try and remove cover to check.
If the sound is not distorting, but just flat and muddy its the tweeters.
Put the other ones on this channel, to make sure it is not the amp.

The noise may be the reason why the speakers were available used. The tweeter may be defective.

Inverted(puhed in)tweeter

Hi George,

You may be able to pull them out using tape. That is sellotape then gently pull .They should pop out like
a dented car panel. My understanding is these domes really protect moving coil from dust so should not affect sound. Worst case swop the tweeter.
Ive just bought a pair of revolution 3 with same "fault" so I will let you know how I get on .I am in Electronics trade as profession. It may be possible to gently remove dome using a surgical blade then popping out and gluing on with PVA / Latex glue coloured with black ink if you dont like white appearance.

It is sometimes possible to pull out using fine sewing needle push in then gently pull out as if removing a spell from your finger.

Hope this helps

My speakers sound flat with no highs at all

I am trying to work out if you have damaged the speakers and amp too.
Have you tried a pair of headphones on the amp? If they sound ok then your amp is fine.
Assuming it is, then speakers have what's called crossover units in side each of them. This splits the sound into three parts. Bass, midrange, treble. The bass is handled by the woofer's, the midrange by a middle sized speaker or or it's combined with a tweeter, which of course handles the treble.
Connecting a 1.5 volt battery across any of the individual speakers will cause it to pop if working. If the speaker then is not getting sound then the crossover unit is to blame.
When you look at the crossover unit, it will have coils and capacitors (non polarised) on it. The bigger ones deal with the bass and the smaller ones treble. If you find a fault say on the crossover of the speaker, for example no treble comes out of it. Then start by replacing the capacitors. Use the same value as on the capacitor and remember they fit any way round.
