Change the USB port to another.
If you have things in the other port, then move one of those to the port the FA is plugged into now.
This will force Windows to reinstall it.

The WDXU800BBRNN hard drive clicks about 15 seconds when plugged into a computer and is not recognized by the computer. This is a Western Digital 80 GB external hard drive.

Sounds like either the drive was accidently dropped while running and is damaged, has damaged circuitry, the hard drive has otherwise crashed, ...best case scenario, is that you have it plugged into a USB port that it doesn't 'like'. Try unplugging and plugging into another USB port on the computer and see if your problem goes away.
Best of luck! Hope this helps!

The My Book E will not back up my data. I was going to transfer data to a new computer - now the old computer won't even recognize my book

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked (with the computer and hard drive plugged in). I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

Longer Recognize on compuer?

The likelyhood here is that you have lost your USB ports. Plug another device into the same port. If it works ok, then suspect your connecting cable. If this is without success, try plugging the dive into another computer. If no good either, take your drive to a data recovery shop. They may be able to rescue your data using their special applications.

Hello there,

There might be a disconnected wire inside your My Book, preventing it to be detected by your computer. Or maybe a broken part that needs to be resoldered. But dont worry, you harddrive is still secure.

What you need to do is to take off the hard disk inside and place it in another USB hard disk enclosure. How to do that, here is a video that could guide you.

Or if you dont have an enclosure you can place that inside another computer for it to detect it as data drive.

If you have further questions, please let me know.

I really need to recover files from my sandisk cruzer

Have you tried this? restart your computer and plug your USB in again(this helps to clean the buffer), see if you drive can be recognized.

If you still can't access the data inside, try this data recovery program Wondershare Data Recovery. Get the program here,

Windows Data Recovery (Windows Version)
Mac Data Recovery (Mac OS version)

Take care - Before those items are recovered, stop saving more files to the device in case the file data are overwritten!

Transfering data

If you are having issues accessing the drive i've encountered that situation before

I tried a different cord and it started working again. Additionally i've had this work for me (see below)

Try This:

  1. Unplug all USB devices
  2. Turn off Ext Hard drive
  3. Shut down computer
  4. Power on ext hard drive (then wait like 1 min)
  5. Turn on computer
  6. Wait for windows to finish loading
  7. Plug in the USB cord from the ext hard drive to your computer (may take up to a minute for computer to recognize it)
  8. If it doesn't recognize it then keep trying it in different USB ports
If it still won't recognize get all the latest windows update and reboot. If that doesn't solve your issue try your external hard drive on some other computers, check to see if drive needs special drivers installed (which most don't).

From SimpleTech's website: "1) I have the drive plugged in but I cannot find the drive in "My Computer", why?
The most likely cause would be not enough power provided by a single USB port on your computer. Unplug the portable drive from the cable and unplug the cable from the computer. Now, plug the cable into 2 USB ports directly on your computer. (If you have a desktop, you should plug the USB cable directly into the USB ports on the back of the computer. If this is a laptop, you should plug directly into a USB ports on the computer. Do not plug into a USB hub or docking station). Then plug the drive into the cable. In a few seconds you should see the drive listed in the "My Computer" window as a SimpleDrivePS."

If all that fails you need to RMA (Return to Manufacturer) your external hard drive. Most hard drives have a pretty decent warranty on them. Your simpletech 250GB has a 3 year warranty on it. Info on the warranty can be found at http://www.simpletech.com/support/warranty/. If you want to RMA it, click the "Technical Support / RMA Request" on the left hand side of that page.
