You are walking a tight-rope.

1) Try removing your hard drive and powering on. If you boot up to green lights, go get you a Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive from a Fry's or computer wholesaler. You can get a 500gig for prety cheap, so treat yourself to an upgrade while you're at it. Sony has all the firmware/updates on their website to format/flash the new hard drive.

2) Unfortunately, if that DIDN"T work, your thermal paste is dried up, no doubt, and not tranferring heat to your heat syncs like it should. At the poiint of "Yellow Light of Death" it's usually too late! You can try to apply new thermal paste and or have a computer repair/ game repair shop do a reflow of the chips and apply a QUALTY SILVER BASED THERMAL COMPOUND to the chip set and clean the system for you. NOTE: Trend shows that this fix, although effective, has no longevity. It could last 7 months, 7 weeks or 7 days????? Anyone telling you different is lying.
SO, DO NOT pay very much for this service.

Which leads me to my close:

IF YOU OWN A PS3 THAT IS OUT OF WARRANTY - NOT IN WARRANTY ANY LONGER - YOU SHOULD CONSIDER HAVING THE THERMAL PASTE CHANGED IMMEDIATELY!!. Get some fresh, "high quality" silver based thermal compound applied and have your system cleaned TO PREVENT the YELLOW LIGHT error from occurring to begin with. Tell your friends, family, whoever.
Preventative maintenence is the key. Fat PS3 (1st Gen) systems should always be played standing on end. The chips face downward so the heat rises through the board when lying flat. ALWAYS keep any game console out in the open with good ventilation on all sides, NEVER in an inclosed cabinet on ent. center.

GOoD luck

This happened to me yesterday. I took the unit out, unplugged it, placed in face down in a box and blew hot air from a blow dryer through the back vents for 15 minutes. I then placed the unit with the back vents face down on top of my a/c duct for 30 minutes and it works again! Its worth a try before trying to disassemble the unit.

PS3 yellow lite of death

What is your question about the YLOD? Typically, it happens for different reasons. Check your A/V connections. If they are not connected, you'll get the YLOD. 2, it has over heated, and has to be taken apart, heated by a heatgun to reform the solder, then new heat gel put on between the board and the cpu/gpu. Pretty easy really. Here is a youtube vid to get you started.

YLOD Ps3

Yes you can fix it because the red/YLOD is just overheating on the main motherboard you can use a good guide that will do this for you or you can send it in to be fixed.

Ps3 turns on then shuts down after few mins then blinking red light

what you got is what is know as yellow lite of death --YLOD

this is the site i got the info from...
http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-3-General/Unofficial-Yellow-Light-of-Death-YLOD-Informative-Still-Thread-R/m-p/40726489

and you are not the only one to experience this. more and more ps3 owners are getting hit with this problem. your best bet will be to send it off to sony if its under warrenty for they'll fix it for free. but be cautious of this for they may even replace your system and you may not get your original system back. if its not under warrenty you'll get hit with an $150 charge.

background

The YLOD is a major hardware failure for the PlayStation 3. The specific cause is somewhat known, but Sony has not commented about this failure whatsoever. Some theories for the cause include:

overheating (accelerated by dust build-up), blu-ray drive failure, bad power supply, and/or a hard drive critical error.

**UPDATE**

According to an eBay store that repairs YLOD PS3's, the hardware failure is caused by either/or of two things:

1. Hardware malfunction on the motherboard due to heating/cooling (solder physically cracking/breaking) which can be fixed by "reflowing", which is a fancy way of using a machine that has a super controlled (+ or - .5 degrees) hot air nozzle to re-melt the solder on the base of the defective chip to re-attach it.

2. The power supply has the failure in one of its capacitors or diodes. This can also be fixed by "reflowing" but it is harder to diagnose due to the need to chase down which one it is.

**According to this eBay store, this scenario is a much more difficult way to repair PS3's with the YLOD. They state they can only repair 8 out of 10 PS3's with the YLOD**

You know you have received the YLOD when the following occurs:

* You power on the console.
* The console starts up normally for about 2-3 seconds,
* The console beeps 3 times while flashing a faint yellow light,
* The console continues to flash a red light.

STATION WILL NOT START UP

The Yellow Light of Death (YLoD) is caused by a hardware failure: a bad power supply, disconnected system or graphics processor, bad fan or cooling failure, or dust build up.
A free do-it-yourself fix for YLoD is available with easy step-by-step instructions and video. Here is a YLoD repair kit that contains all the tools you need to complete the task.

Dear fixya experts. i have YLOD yellow light of death on my playstation 3 console i tried to fix it with heat gun,but it wouldn't work.i fixed 2 YLOD before with heat gun,but this one isn't working.is...

the 3 most common causes are.
1. overheat (the prossesor comes loose as on some models the solder used was low grade)
2.hard drive fail
3.laser dismount (ussually caused by moving the console with a disk in)

solutions.
1.hold the on button for 5 seconds then turn on
2.remove hd and hoover console as much as possible
3.remove hd and drop from a height of 4-5 inches onto carpet to loosen needle
4.call sony
5.buy a new one
6.buy a xbox 360 (obviously the best option ;0) )

hope this helps but in most cases the ylod is a pay to get fixed solution

PS3 Red/Yellow Light

If you are seeing this error it is because the GPU and the CPU have overheated and you will need to stop the heat to fix this. You can send the console in and they will fix it for you but it does take about 4 weeks to fix.

You can quite easily fix this with a few household tiems from home.
