You are walking a tight-rope.
1) Try removing your hard drive and powering on. If you boot up to green lights, go get you a Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive from a Fry's or computer wholesaler. You can get a 500gig for prety cheap, so treat yourself to an upgrade while you're at it. Sony has all the firmware/updates on their website to format/flash the new hard drive.
2) Unfortunately, if that DIDN"T work, your thermal paste is dried up, no doubt, and not tranferring heat to your heat syncs like it should. At the poiint of "Yellow Light of Death" it's usually too late! You can try to apply new thermal paste and or have a computer repair/ game repair shop do a reflow of the chips and apply a QUALTY SILVER BASED THERMAL COMPOUND to the chip set and clean the system for you. NOTE: Trend shows that this fix, although effective, has no longevity. It could last 7 months, 7 weeks or 7 days????? Anyone telling you different is lying.
SO, DO NOT pay very much for this service.
Which leads me to my close:
IF YOU OWN A PS3 THAT IS OUT OF WARRANTY - NOT IN WARRANTY ANY LONGER - YOU SHOULD CONSIDER HAVING THE THERMAL PASTE CHANGED IMMEDIATELY!!. Get some fresh, "high quality" silver based thermal compound applied and have your system cleaned TO PREVENT the YELLOW LIGHT error from occurring to begin with. Tell your friends, family, whoever.
Preventative maintenence is the key. Fat PS3 (1st Gen) systems should always be played standing on end. The chips face downward so the heat rises through the board when lying flat. ALWAYS keep any game console out in the open with good ventilation on all sides, NEVER in an inclosed cabinet on ent. center.
GOoD luck
This happened to me yesterday. I took the unit out, unplugged it, placed in face down in a box and blew hot air from a blow dryer through the back vents for 15 minutes. I then placed the unit with the back vents face down on top of my a/c duct for 30 minutes and it works again! Its worth a try before trying to disassemble the unit.
PS3 Red/Yellow Light
If you are seeing this error it is
because the GPU and the CPU have overheated and you will need to stop
the heat to fix this. You can send the console in and they will fix
it for you but it does take about 4 weeks to fix.
You can quite easily fix this with a
few household tiems from home.
