Lens won't retract

Hi, my DCS-W5 (5.1mp) won't retract it's lens. When I turn it off it sort of tries to retract but doesn't. When I turn it on it say "Turn the power off then on again'. What's the fix? :-)

No i havent dropped it or used it at the beach but i actually did just drop it trying to fix it and the lens retracted. it seems though i've been having problems with batteries and i bought new ones and charged them. do you think it would help to clean the contacts and if so, how do you do that? Thanks.

Dear Clarkrock.
it seems that there is a friction in the lense movement, which is stopping lense to retract. one of the reasons --------- have you dropped it or used it on a beach, entering of sand into the movement is a common problem.

According to Sony, storing the camera lens-down in a warm area for an extended period (a week) can help re-lubricate the retractor drive in cases like this.

This camera seems to have a predisposition to lens retraction problems. Try some gentle nudging, Even a small piece of debris can jam the mechanism, so it might just need a little push or pull.

No, the contacts won't be affected by anything but the heaviest of corrosion (like when your batteries leak).

But new rechargeable batteries can definitely make a big difference. NiMH batteries are supposed to last for several hundred charging cycles, but they can begin losing their capacity much earlier.

Canon power shot SD1200 IS elpf won't retract

This is a delicate operation but you can try this: tap the camera lens up on a towel over a hard surface (counter top or floor) while you expect the lens to retract as in turning off. It may be enough jarring force to get cams back in the helix that moved the lens. Hit it hard and flat. IF that doesnt work, try tapping the lens down while it tries to retract. I have heard that people get so frustrated with it that they slam the camera lens up on a desk and that fixes it!

Sony dcs-w370 cybershot hi, i didnt know that one isnt supposed to clean the lens with a cloth. i tried to wipe off a bit of dirt on my cam lens with my cotton t shirt. now whenever i take pictures,...

Welcome to FixYa.

Yes the lens can still be sorted out if you bring it to a camera shop. You can clean the camera lens but make sure to use a pure cotton fabric to avoid scratches. It might be coincidental but the blur might come from a moist inside the lens which can also be sorted out. Camera lens are not easily scratched or damaged just by wiping it with a cloth.

Thank you for using Fixya.

MY lens on my camera wont go down and now my camera wont work

If I recall correctly, there was a recall for this issue and alot of people had this problem in the past. We contacted the manufacturer and they refunded our money. Here are some other things you can try. Hope this helps.

Here are some simple things to try first for a camera that won’t power on. They won’t work for every case, but they’re worth a try:

If you get it to respond, and if next the lens doesn’t want to retract:

Cannot get the oven blub out of dcs oven, the lens cover will not come loose

Hi.Try spraying WD40 around lens cover.
Then place cloth around lens cover, and grip with a pair of grips, and twist anti-clockwise, it should come off.
Please rate my solution.
Thanks.
