Question about Toshiba 50H81 50" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Toshiba 50H81 Power but no picture or audio

Scott,
I took the power board loose on my set and looked underneath it and I found a burnt circuit. Next to F852 there is a wire jumper with the number 058 next to it. The circuit is burnt from one side of that jumper to one side of another wire jumper with the number 072 next to it. Any ideas on what could have caused this. Thanks.
John

Its possible that flood leaked on board from a tube leaking.
clean the area and scrape the burnt area really good so that it won't conduct. then make a jumper from some small wire to the areas you need. check tubes on the bottoms of the metel areas not the crt for something wet... if this fixes your problem then cover your board with a plastic or foam sheet so that it drains forward away from the board. also when you find what tube it is, you may want to ask ways to fix it or how to keep it from leaking.
but if its not a leaky tube then you may have had lightning or power surge. may want to go ahead and check all parts connected to that area for a short. just to make sure there isn't another problem before you start it up.
good luck let me know.

The screen on our 50H81 Toshiba is blank, there is no audio and the red light by the power switch is blinking at a rate of one blink per second.

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2
Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Maybe High Voltage Transformer, you can have a board replaced easier than buying a new set.

When we turn on our Toshiba 50h81, it will work ok for 45-90 minutes, then without warning, the picture and sound will go off and the power light blinks. We have to let it set for awhile (I've never timed...

These Toshiba TVs have a problem on the power board that causes this issue and it is a common one. There are several capacitors on the power board that seem prone to coming loose over time. When they lose connection for a moment the TV's protection system steps in and cuts off power. This causes the 'blinking power light' issue. The last one I repaired was a 43V71 model and I re-soldered one loose capacitor on the power board and it has worked perfectly ever since. Toshiba put out a service bulletin on this problem. It is well known and well worth fixing.

No picture and the power light blinks

A red blinking light could mean that the lamp timer is at it's limit and it is time to change the lamp. You will also have to reset the lamp timer by pushing and holding down 2-3 buttons on the tv or remote. Refer to your user guide for the proper way to reset and or change your lamp.

Red power light flashing; will not turn on.

It is very likely that one of the convergence correction chips has gone south on you (either that or a capacitor). What you want to look for is a swollen capacitor , or a burnt resistor near the two large heatsinks on the signal/convergence PCB. The flashing LED is an indication that the power supply has detected a fault, your mission is to determine what that might be. another thing to check out at the fuses on the power supply PCB (these have labels like FXXX were XXX is a number). If you find an open fuse, that will help determine where to look for the fault.

I have no picture and my power red light is

Tell all users of this site that the issue you seem to be facing is common in alot of rear projection tvs. When they shut down and the red light flashes, it may need a component known as a large signal board/deflection board for particular model and brand of tv. Ask a technician for more advice. But i believe this is the issue

50h81 looks like 3d

It sounds like on of the convergence ICs took the deep six. These are on the Sig/Conv PCB, attached to large heat sinks. P/N STK392-110 (probably) When changing these out, check the power resistors next to the chips... chances are one of the resistors is open.

Toshiba 50H81 Has Power but No picture or Audio

ok i'm goin to need more info about your problem. you stated fuses and didn't say the location numbers of the fuses. Also, have you rechecked your fuses to see if they are all still good? 3 fuses sounds like more then one problem. once you tell us your loc#'s of your fuses, we can look into your problems.
