Looking at the post date this might be a wee late to help but...

3 ways to turn it off when it doesn't want to.

1. Push and hold down the blue power button it should turn it off.
2. reset button on bottom of case (some models have, a lot don't)
3. Unplug it from the ac adapter, unlock the battery and start to remove it. This is when all else fails but shouldn't hurt anything.

Then find out why it locked up

In order to assist I need to know what the Lenovo model is; what you have done to troubleshoot and the outcomes.
Generally these types of issues are due to defective power supplies or batteries, as Lenovos and most laptops require batteries to be in working order to function. The problem can be in the keyboard, the battery unit, the onboard power supply so if you can provide a bit more detailed info I may be able to help.

Why do the ac led remain lit when its unplugged and only the battery is in?

Use this small secret. Disconnect the power adapter from laptop+ battery too.
2) Press the power button for 60 seconds EXACTLY. with the adapter+battery disconnected from the battery.
3) The idea is to eliminate de ESD from power supply, that impede to laptop to work o.k from starting.
Try again.
Hoowever if the problem remain, problem can be there in the power supply inside from laptop. You must open and repair or call some tech computer. for fix it.
God bless you

I opened my computer and it was on, but the screen was frozen so I shut it down and tried to reboot it, but it wouldn't turn on. I thought it was something to do with the battery being dead, so I plugged...

It has something to do with the power supply of your unit or the motherboard itself, especially when you isolate the battery and plug only the power cable and i wont turn on. In this case, you can reseat the power supply by removing the cables and battery when the unit is off, remove the screws below it, remove the hard drive, remove the optical drive then remove the power supply and reseat it. Then perform the steps in descending order (insert optical, hard drive, screws, battery, cables). Turn it on and observe if there are lights lit on the keyboard. If you don't know how to do this or if symptom persists, consult HP tech support for repair of your laptop..

Laptop battery meter reading unknown remaining

your battery is spoilt. but first try recalibrating it at system start up (if your laptop has that option) otherwise, you have to buy another battery.

The screen is frozen on Windows is shutting down

Turn off the power to the device, remove the battery pack.

Now replace battery pack and power supply and try rebooting.

If you still have a problem report it again on this thread.
