Electrolytic capacitor usually blown up the top only in you can still reading the value in the body of the capacitor like the voltage and micro farad example 400V/33UF that's the value of the capacitor

When the DC filter caps no longer filter out high frequency AC, that AC will be fed through out the circuits and cause damages such as the inverter frequency will be running at the wrong frequency and caused overheating.
The service manual does not show the sch of the power supply/inverter board because it is not designed by Viewsonic.

AC power ok reading 119vac at board test point but still not working. Tried with video board disconnected, still no power on light

Are you getting 160vdc on the primary AC side on the large electrolytic cap (120~180uF 250~450VDC rating)?
Any 5vdc and 12vdc present, it should be there when it is plugged into the outlet since it is always running?

Your unit has bad caps in the inverter and the power supply. The bad caps in the inverter causes a mosfet to short out and this blows the inline fuses on the inverter. After the fuses blow, the power light will still go on but there will be no power going to the inverter. It is possible to repair this damage, I have fixed over 40 of this model monitor. You can find more info by searching this model on badcaps . net. I can be contacted there as user 'bluto'

Most cap meter does not have the ESR measurement function, the cap can look OK but it can have high ESR. Did you replace the bad one with LOW ESR, 105c type such as PANASONIC FM or FC series from DIGIKEY?
When the filter caps went out it may have taken out the components in the inverter circuits with it also. Check the transistors/Ic, inverter transformers.

savato321, Most black screen lcd monitor owners don't have the smarts to open up their monitors to do a VISUAL inspection of the "switch-mode-power-supply/inverter supply!!!! You're good. Now you will need to know some stuff about electrolytic filter capacitors! First, the "uf" or "UF" means micro-farad! It is just a rating given to express the storage capacity of the device. Next is the voltage rating. A 16v rating means that the capacitor should never be placed in a circuit where the voltage will exceed 10 to 12 volts DC. Your 820 uf cap rated at 25volts will most likely be in a 12 to 18volt dc circuit. Now for temperature rating. All caps have a maximum temp rating. Most clock radios, stereos, will use 85 degree centegrade rated caps. Printers,PCs,monitors, will use 105 degree C rated capacitors. Never replace with lower specification units! You can GO up but never DOWN. If 1000uf 25v is all you can get it's OK. If you can get 820uf 35v units and they are not too big and they will fit on the board sure you can use them. I would stick with the OEM design voltage rating. Electrolytic CAPS are polarized!! You must replace them + to + and - to -!!! If you screw -up they will blow-up!! The wire lead closest to the printed STRIPE on the cap will be the negative and the unmarked terminal will be the positive. If you visit www.ccl-la.com/badcaps.htm you will get more info on recapping your SMPS. You can also watch some DIY videos at YOUTUBE for "lcd monitor repair" that might be helpful. Also visually inspect the SMPS/inverter printed circuit board for "COLD" FROSTY looking solder joints. They should all have near mirror finish to them. Let us know the name of the BAD CAPS you remove from your unit. You may even want to document with pics with a digital camera what you find. Well, good luck guy. 12fixlouie

On modern capacitors 2005 or up the capacitors can go bad and not even bulge at the top. I replaced a few in my moms flap panel monitor and found out that there were more that were bad and they didn't show any signs of damage but put your finger on one of those suckers and it burns like a smoking gun.

Actually that model has an integrated inverter with the power supply. Should be part # xlm1700390004 they cost around 25 bux and are fairly easy to replace.

If you are handy with soldering you could check the three 470 uf caps on the board they are tank caps and when they go they do what you are describing. Open the monitor and look at the three black capacitors if the top is bulged they are bad. If you have a capacitance meter check the capacitance it will most likly be well below 470 uf the caps are cheap like 39 cents if you do go this route use 30v not 25v caps to be on the safe side.

Word of warning switching power supplies can kill you quickly never work on it live and let it discharge at least an hour before working on it.

Monitor turns off after two seconds

Your inverter board is bad. They run anywhere from $30 - $80. They are very easy to replace. I have had this problem with three monitors and replacing the inverter board fixed the problem. Hard to say where you will find the part. Just do a search for 'inverter board' with your model # on any search engine.
Good Luck!

Bad Inverter. Or a surface mount component on the inverter. Either way it needs to be trouble shot down to the component level or replace the inverter board.
