Take a Q-tip with water on it and rub it around the side of the buttons.

The lights come on the playstation, but the screen stays black, and it doesnt read the controller, the controller just keeps blinking.

For the screen try making sure the cable is firmly connected to both your ps3 and your tv. For the controller, plug the controller into you playstation with a usb cord and then press the ps button.

My sp3 buttons get stuck, how can I lubricate the buttons whitout messing up the controller.

Take a hot cloth (as hot as you can get it without burning yourself) and let the steam (as steam cleans everything) clean the controller. Just give it a 'hot towel treatment.' Easy Peasy..

Direction button seems to have stuck and the menus just keep scrolling really fast

Based on what you've written, it appears there is something internally wrong with your controller. Either the button keeps sticking and it won't lift back up or it could be a dust problem. This usually happens when your controller takes severe beatings after losing to a boss battle or just from old age. You should try the following:

- Try blowing into the controller slot or using a q-tip and rubbing alcohol to clean the pins
- Make sure the controller is plugged in correctly then try resetting the game console (usually the controller has to be plugged in before turning on a system)
- If you're brave enough, take apart the controller and pop the button back into place
- The rubber padding separating the plastic button and the computer chip might be worn (sometimes it becomes extremely sensitive)
- If all else fails, I'd consider purchasing a new controller

I hope this helped,

Controller Problem

most probably the controller's carbon button inside the controller is already worn out and is sticking on the controller's printed circuit board (PCB) there are some replacement carbon button that can be bought for a cheap price

if you are using an analog controller, check if the analog stick is loose in feeling, this might affect the controls as well because good working analog sticks are a little stiff when pushed

My playstation 3 analog sticks are becoming more stiff and are sticking in every position except the centre, which causes major problems when trying to stay still in games.

Yeah my controller started sticking up and not centering properly when released. I tried everything to clean it up but nothing worked untill I went to the local electronics store and got some contact cleaner with lubricating oil. (MG Chemicals - Nu-trol contact cleaner with special lubrication oils) Open the controller ( see youtube) the analog sticks cannot be taken apart but if you push the stick up you can squirt the base and work the cleaner/lube into the base. I squirted a bit on all 4 sides (left, right, up , down) working it in making a circular motion with the stick. Worked quite well and is the only thing so far that works at all. These seem to be sealed units (the sticks) with no way to open the business end to clean up the contacts. I put a toothpick under the tracing sheet to help with evaporation of the cleaner. Hope this helps.
