Question about Hamilton Beach /PROCTOR SILEX 42494 12C BLK Coffeemaker
Hi: bought a PS black 12 cup (numbers on bottom: 41334 and B1830Z. Also says is an "A20 type coffee maker") coffee maker used with no manual. On top of the plastic part that is above the filter, there is a switch that points at either of two tiny coffee cups. I'm guessing that this is some kind of mechanism to make stronger or weaker coffee. Am I correct? And would the tiny coffee cup with thicker walls be the one that indicates a stronger brew?

some of these coffee makers have feed tubes, which can be seen in the rear water reservoir, that feed the hot water to the grounds. some of these tubes collapse when the boiling water passes through them , then kink , causing the water to stop flowing untill it either cools or is straightened. To check and see if this is occuring.. look in the back reservoir, if there's a tube running through it, note how soft it gets as it starts to brew.. be careful the water inside the tube is hot.. This indentify why it stops brewing partway though..

If the model you have is a 74214, I had the same problem. I had to repeatedly turn the pot off and on to get a whole pot of coffee. I returned the first one within 90 days back to Walmart with no receipt. They exchanged it with no problem The second one did the same thing so it went back also. I was going to exchange it for the same model but got lucky and found the next upgrade model (47665) on sale at that time. Not only did Walmart credit me the cost of the faulty one, but refunded me the $5.00 difference!!!! I've had the better model (47665) for about 9 nonths now and had a problem with a waher/gasket falling out causing the coffee to run all over the place. I called Hamilton Beach customer service at 1-800-851-8900 and explained the problem. They informed me that the tiny plasitc piece that holds the gasket in place had broken and I would need a whole new tank. They then informed me that for the $5.00 cost of shipping, they would send me the new tank FREE OF CHARGE!!!!!! AMAZING. I love Hamilton Beach and know that they stand behind their products. Call them at 1-800-851-8900 and explain the problem. I'm sure they will remedy the issue at little or no cost to you and if it can be repaired, I know they will send the part with instructions at no cost. Good Luck to you. Katherine
