Question about Epson Stylus Photo 1280 InkJet Printer
Hi. I have an Epson Stylus CX6600 and my magenta ink just ran out. I bought a magenta ink cartridge a while back and can't seem to find it, but in the mean time I would just like to print in black and white. For some reason, it doesn't want to let me do that. Is there any way for me to bypass the message that says "Magenta ink out" and just keep printing in Black and White? black ink cartridge empty but don't have another, put in new color cartridge, but will not print black words, only color graphics
One of the possible reason why you can't print black in white because Epson ink jet printers require all of the ink cartridges to have ink in them in order to print any color, black and white, or grayscale images. More than that Epson printers contain a permanent print head that needs to be charged with all colors to work. Even when users are printing black text only, a small amount of color ink is used to keep the print head charged for color printing and prevent air bubbles from entering the color print nozzles which can damage the print head.

I had the same problem with the EPSOM DX7400.. does not print in black and white IF any of the colour wells are empty.. this is a real CON. I shall gain great enjoyment from taking it into the garden this afternoon and letting rip with a sledge hammer. Then i shall buy from a manufacturer that does not fleece its customers in such a way.
In fact i would like to buy a simple black and white printer but yet to find one. right pain.

Yes, I had the same experience... very aggravating...
Makes sense that it is a technical problem of the printer, and printer head, but can't help thinking it's a corporate move for profit reasons.
Solution: boycott Epson... they are profiteering b**ta**s

I agree, I have an Epson I bought 3 years ago, had 6months use, and i was sick of the colour wells running dry from non use and not being able to print B&W unless I paid for new colour wells. YES ! A real CON. I called the support line, and basically Epson have their head up their Arse. I call for you all to also boycott Epson Printers

What i can recommend is call epson and tell them about this issue and for sure they are going to replace the ink and will run diagnostic test on your printer- here is there support line number 562-276-1300

I would recommend cleaning the contacts (brass colored connections) with an eraser if might resolve the issue. It that does not resolve the issue it might be one of two other things. Either the printhead is cloged or the cable to the printerhead is damaged.

Print first a nozzle check pattern, self test which they say. Check your manual for your printer, it should be accessible from that if you dont have any manual, go to the epson website and download a manual. Usually the self test would go like this.
While the printer is turned off, you press and hold down the paper feed button, continue holding it down while turning on the printer. It will print the nozzle check pattern standalone. If you see all the colors then the issue your having is a color management issue, if you do not see the cyan, magenta, yellow, black, light magenta and light cyan from that test; then you will need to do 3 consecutive times of Head Cleaning from the maintenance program in your computer. If you have a windows xp it goes like this.
Click on start go to control panel - printers and faxes -
you right click on your printer icon and select printing prefrences. From there, go to maintenance tab and click head cleaning, go through that cycle 3 consecutive times and see if it improved. Good luck....

Try replacing the magenta cartridge...
Does it also do this when you try to use it as a copier? If so,
try to clean the head.. If it only happens when you're printing from the computer, try to reinstall the driver
