Printing in black & white when color cartridge ran out

Hi. I have an Epson Stylus CX6600 and my magenta ink just ran out. I bought a magenta ink cartridge a while back and can't seem to find it, but in the mean time I would just like to print in black and white. For some reason, it doesn't want to let me do that. Is there any way for me to bypass the message that says "Magenta ink out" and just keep printing in Black and White? black ink cartridge empty but don't have another, put in new color cartridge, but will not print black words, only color graphics

joannezee here.....I didn't post the above note, I posted about an Epson Stylus 1280 that won't print in black.....the black cartridge is empty but there is a new color cartridge installed......printer only prints color graphics. I checked the option for B&W but it doesn't make any difference. Thanks.

One of the possible reason why you can't print black in white because Epson ink jet printers require all of the ink cartridges to have ink in them in order to print any color, black and white, or grayscale images. More than that Epson printers contain a permanent print head that needs to be charged with all colors to work. Even when users are printing black text only, a small amount of color ink is used to keep the print head charged for color printing and prevent air bubbles from entering the color print nozzles which can damage the print head.

I had the same problem with the EPSOM DX7400.. does not print in black and white IF any of the colour wells are empty.. this is a real CON. I shall gain great enjoyment from taking it into the garden this afternoon and letting rip with a sledge hammer. Then i shall buy from a manufacturer that does not fleece its customers in such a way.
In fact i would like to buy a simple black and white printer but yet to find one. right pain.

Yes, I had the same experience... very aggravating...
Makes sense that it is a technical problem of the printer, and printer head, but can't help thinking it's a corporate move for profit reasons.
Solution: boycott Epson... they are profiteering b**ta**s

I agree, I have an Epson I bought 3 years ago, had 6months use, and i was sick of the colour wells running dry from non use and not being able to print B&W unless I paid for new colour wells. YES ! A real CON. I called the support line, and basically Epson have their head up their Arse. I call for you all to also boycott Epson Printers

HP is just as bad or worse. We have had FOUR bad HP printers in a row. They used to be the best, in our opinion. New photosmart models do not even recognize new cartridges - bought from HP. Are there any decent printers being made? The new small HP laser printers are junk, also, Cannot even add paper without printer crashing. And we are not technically dysfunctional.

SOURCE: Epson Stylus R230 Light Magenta Not working

I would recommend cleaning the contacts (brass colored connections) with an eraser if might resolve the issue. It that does not resolve the issue it might be one of two other things. Either the printhead is cloged or the cable to the printerhead is damaged.
Good luck

Print first a nozzle check pattern, self test which they say. Check your manual for your printer, it should be accessible from that if you dont have any manual, go to the epson website and download a manual. Usually the self test would go like this.

While the printer is turned off, you press and hold down the paper feed button, continue holding it down while turning on the printer. It will print the nozzle check pattern standalone. If you see all the colors then the issue your having is a color management issue, if you do not see the cyan, magenta, yellow, black, light magenta and light cyan from that test; then you will need to do 3 consecutive times of Head Cleaning from the maintenance program in your computer. If you have a windows xp it goes like this.

Click on start go to control panel - printers and faxes -
you right click on your printer icon and select printing prefrences. From there, go to maintenance tab and click head cleaning, go through that cycle 3 consecutive times and see if it improved. Good luck....

SOURCE: epson stylus rx500 prints too magenta-ie

Try replacing the magenta cartridge...
Does it also do this when you try to use it as a copier? If so,
try to clean the head.. If it only happens when you're printing from the computer, try to reinstall the driver

How do u change the ink in the epson 6000?

Things You'll Need:
  • Replacement cartridge (black, cyan, magenta, or yellow)
  1. Step 1 Turn on the printer and press the Color button.
  2. Step 2 Lift up the scanner and wait for the ink cartridge holder to move into position. Remove the ink cartridge holder's cover.
  3. Step 3 Push the tab at the back of the empty ink cartridge to free it from the cartridge holder. Lift the empty cartridge out and dispose of it.
  4. Step 4 Prepare the replacement cartridge by shaking it gently while still in its packaging. Remove the cartridge from its wrapper, taking care to hold it by the sides.
  5. Step 5 Insert the replacement cartridge into the appropriate slot of the ink cartridge holder. Push down on the replacement cartridge until it clicks into place.
  6. Step 6 Close the cartridge cover and lower the scanner until it clicks into place. The printer is now ready for operation

My Epson CX6600 prints but the words seem to have skipped parts. No word or line is complete. Although there is ink, printing is very light. Any suggestions?

This sounds like you need to replace the ink cartridges. Stuff is missing because the ink is very low or empty. Also, if you have just replaced the ink cartridges then you might need to do a cleaning cycle on the printer.

Epson cx6600 printing only magenta even with new cartidges

Try remove and shake the inks and reinstall it back in and test to print. If you have tried more than 4x with the head cleaning it might be your ink pads inside the printer is clogged. Is this still under warranty? You have to call Epson they might help you out with it.

Printing in black & white when color cartridge ran out

I had the same problem. Had no choice but to buy the colors I ran out to make the printer work. In order to avoid future problems and save on color inked I attempted to follow the steps of a previous posting, however, that did not work for me. This is what I had did. Print, select properties, advance, continue, check box - Black ink only. Remember when you decide to print in color you must reset your setting and take out the check from the - Black ink only.

Brand New Printer

Hi Teetle, No, it not normal to only get two pages per cartridge. I would try the following before contacting Epson tech support: -Remove the cartridges and clean the contacts on both the printer and cartridge. -Reinsert each cartridge making sure it is seated correctly. -Buy one black cartridge and install. It is possible that the cartridge is defective but since the magenta cartridge is showing low its unlikely. Tech support will want you to try it before they will replace the printer so you?re best off trying it now. If after trying this steps there is no change and if you?ve had it for less than 7 days I would talk to your retail store. Usually they will just trade your defective unit for one in stock. If you have had it longer contact Epson support and explain what it happening and what you?ve done. Make sure you mention you?ve bought a new Epson black cartridge with no change. Let us know if you have any other questions and please don?t forget to rate this post.
